The wording of your OP was slightly confusing, it wasn't immediately obvious exactly what you meant. Hands up, I know my posts are sometimes the same. It's often worth reading them again before clicking "add reply", trying to see it like an outsider would.

I've nothing against her on 16:52 - Feb 28 by Cheltenham_Blue | People need a figurehead. And she's galvanised support for the climate change movement amongst the yoof, in fact, it could be argued she started it single handedly in the current era. I wonder if people said the same as you about Ghandi? Thats not me having a pop btw, but I genuinely think people said the same. For him and countless others too. [Post edited 28 Feb 2020 16:53]

I take your point. To be fair, if anyone started the current movment it was attenborough and his programmes. They caught the imagination of the yoof. I just dont get the greta obsession, shes not an expert in the field or anything. But like you say, some people just need someone to follow.

I've nothing against her on 16:56 - Feb 28 by Swansea_Blue | I've got a climate science background. I spent the best part of 12-13 years working on problems caused by climate change. I've since spent about 10 years working in climate or related projects or working with scientists working on climate change and related issues. And I agree Chelters. I'm not a fan of the language being used; 'climate emergency', 'world on fire', etc. It's probably correct, but it just turns people off. I don't know what the answer is though - using less emotive language and being more reticent doesn't work either. It used to be a great field to work in; interesting, cutting edge and, critically, politicians would listen. These days it' been politicised to the point of tedious and attracts too many self-righteous justice warriors (or whatever the term is). There IS a major problem, but it's getting lost in all the noise, vested interests, lobbying, polarised 'debate', etc. Maybe a young girl highlighting how we're failing is just what's needed? |
"Maybe a young girl highlighting how we're failing is just what's needed?" I completely agree, but, I was going to say 'in this country', but actually, worldwide, there are two perceived problems with it. a) She's Young b) She's a Girl Therefore a large number of people, not all, and not a majority by any means, will look to attack her and any apparent disparity in her argument. Therefore lines like, "the world is on fire" whilst its chucking it down are going to get seized on by that minority and she'll take some real sh it tonight on Twitter. She needs to be better advised by whoever is helping her to prepare for public engagements in my opinion. [Post edited 28 Feb 2020 17:06]

Yep. Exactly this. Scroll through twitter and it is full of bellends attacking her because it is 5 degrees and raining. Of course the issue is the bellends and not her, but she's not going to convert anyone else today!

Tbf, whilst the Australian bush fires were in full burn all over the country, the images we were getting on the news etc looked pretty bliblical, & gave the impression that that continent in all its vastness was on fire!

To be fair, they weren't all over the country. They were localised to an extent... ....although that localised area was probably still the size of the UK!

| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

We've not had a really, really, really good frost all winter either. It's really, really, really not a good thing for the garden. Genuinely don't think we've had a frost that has lasted past about 9am all winter.

There's no point trying to convert people at this point. I've posted this a few times but if at this point you aren't on board, there isn't really much else that is going to convince you because the evidence is absolutely overwhelming. And it's been talked about by scientists and other people who put more eloquent arguments for decades. And the most we've got out of it are some weak promises that we'll do something at some point. Maybe. Honestly at this point, I'll take anger if it gets something done.

The point is, cretin, that an area about the size of Europe was on fire. Would you call that localised?

Unless you can change Chinas, Americas and Canadas minds, then these protests are pretty pointless. I realise every little helps, but the 3 afore mentioned really don't give a $h1t about a young lady talking about climate change in Bristol. Climate change is real, but money talks in most countries and will continue regardless.

I meant that the pins indicating the location of each (yes, local) fire on maps of Australia, showed them as being located all over the country from N-S and W-E, and that there were hundreds of pins. Should probably have taken my own advice & previewed before posting
