Hate to say it, but this post does suggest you are a bit of a nob.

I'm sure you're not, but what a weird thing to get annoyed by.

He’s also very wedded to this woke term, which also suggests a level of nobbery, but am sure you’re correct.

I think the apology was fair enough.

I wouldn't say that it was a particularly ignorant mistake... but I guess it has educated a lot of people, so thats a plus!

Apology has been made, we move on. Nothing to see here.

Not sure what is nobbish about being concerned about censorship. The article says the flag is still in widespread use in Japan. Absolutely nobody made a complaint about it, yet they saw fit to apologize for an offence that wasn't caused and have gone back re-edited the program.

It's a comparatively trivial issue, but thin end of the wedge and all that.

I can certainly think of a few gentlemen from round this neck of the woods who would have been appalled to see it on the telly, had they been still alive. There were a LOT of men from East Anglia who were Japanese POWS.

My maternal grandad, who spent a lot of time with the navy in Asia/Australasia and crewed a vessel used for transportation of former POWs from that particular theatre of operations certainly would have had a few things to say about it.

I'm not disputing that.

I am disputing that the mistake was a mark of ignorance.

I think amongst the majority of the general UK population, the true meaning of that symbol is not well known.

Apology made, we move on.

It's all about the context really.

Should we remove nazi flags from history programmes? I would say no.
Would a nazi flag be appropriate on ant and dec? I would say no, it's light entertainment, freddie starr fans may disagree with me.
Should a flag not deemed to be offensive in Japan be used on ant and dec? I don't see why not.

Maybe not, because lots of non-Japanese people DO find it offensive. A bit like the Confederate Flag, for example.

So something's only offensive if it gets complained about?

They decided, on reflection, it was inappropriate and issued an apology to those who may have found it distasteful. Not a lot wrong with that nor is it much of an issue.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

No, because that's plainly appropriate given the context of the show.
I'm pretty sure that other, non-contentious Eastern symbols/flags are available for a skit on a daft Saturday night light entertainment show and no-one will be hurt by it.

You probably needed to be more specific in your use of the word.

They were specifically ignorant when it came to knowledge of Japanese symbolism.

They were not generally ignorant.

I don't think the majority of people under 40 would have recognised what that symbol stood for.

Indeed, to paraphrase you;

I can think of a few dead people who would have been offended by that if they were alive.

I'll confess, I wasn't aware of the significance of it myself.
