I would imagine that that game and the one at BSE were hastily arranged rather than pre decided as they were opportunities to take the new F.A. Cup holders out into wider Suffolk.

They might have been pre planned, I don't know.

Mick Lambert had a testimonial match at PR on the Monday after the final and the last league game of the season at home to Wolves was played on the Tuesday so including the final there were five games played by ITFC teams in a week.

I remember the Mick Lambert testimonial and, especially, the Wolves game because the team was utterly knackered by then. Mick Mills scouring the crowd for a sight of Susan George had gone totally out of control...

First season when we were relegated back to Division 2.....1964
Although we were bottom we did not go down without a fight, won 3 home matches 4-3
What we would give to see that type of performance from any Ipswich team over the past few years.

I remember seeing those scores in the paper. For some reason we were frogmarched to Whitton Rec sometimes to play football even though Castle Hill rec was right by the school. Whenever our junior games ended with that scoreline a teacher would nod sagely and say 'ah, the old 4-3' and it was probably the first time I understood what an adult's oblique remark meant.

My first memory must have been against Spurs early 70's. Don't remember the match or score but the memory is Ralph Coates bombing down the wing, the guy looked bald but hair flying behind him, no idea why it made such an impression on me but one of those weird things that just sticks. Be interested now to know the date but imagine around 1973.

Might have been the same one that I was watching from the top of the car park over the road.

first game, Sheffield Utd , April 72, we lost. Was already a fan, O’Rourke being the first name I got hooked on! Went to a few more with Dad in following seasons, but fA Youth Cup Final 75, we won, trophy being paraded around the pitch, what a time! I think Wark, Gates, possibly Osman playing?
Entering up Churchmans steps in 76’ for a night game. The lights, the look of the pitch, the goal nets were red I think?
Plus, you could smell the liniment!

First match....
May 1983
Town 3 Watford 1

Pretty sure it was another poster's first match too from things I've read before....

That was my second match funnily enough.

My first was a 3-0 win against Luton a few months earlier.

I went for years when I was too young to remember anything other than the wooden stool I stood on, the barriers, north stand fence and Paul Cooper.

The first really vivid memory I have was when I switched to the Pioneer for a game and saw Kevin Wilson score a hat-trick against Stoke......who had about 5 fans (& a flag) present.

I have very vague recollections of me and my Mum and Dad gathered round the tv to watch the 1978 Cup Final - I would have been 3. Can remember my Dad cheering when we scored and jumping out of my skin and my Mum shushing him.

Can remember friends at school discussing the UEFA Cup parade, and seeing it on tv, but we didn't go. I would have been 6 then.

First game was February 1983, we beat Luton 3-0. Alan Brazil or John Wark scored after 2 minutes.

FA Cup 5th round 1981, home v Charlton. They were div 3 I think. Town won 2-0, Wark and Mariner scored? Couldn’t see anything from the terrace that used to be on the Pioneer Stand at the front. Was 8 years old.

Ralph Coates played for Spurs at Portman Road on:-

3rd April 1972
6th October 1973
14th December 1974
31st January 1976
21st August 1976

So take your pick-he was not in the Spurs team at PR in 1972/73.

Watching the VHS of us beating Arsenal in the FA Cup final at my Grandads house. Watched the video over 100 times I think.

Being taken by my Dad to the Div 2 game against Derby on 8th Feb 1958, 2 days after the Munich air crash. I was just under 8 years old. We were late getting there and had to stand still and observe the 2 minute silence as we made our way alongside the Practice pitch to a place on the old West stand terrace. I didn't have the faintest idea what was going on and my Dad had to keep telling me to keep quiet. Afterwards I assumed that every game started with 2 minutes silence. We drew 2-2 after being 2-0 up

Think I saw him playing for Orient in the cup, 79’? Had a bit of a set to with Beattie?

Just checked-he did play for Orient and The Beat was in our team so you may well be right.

I remember going to the replay in London which we won 2-0.

I can’t remember the exact game but it was in 1949 / 1950 when I went to several games with my grandad. He was a Norwich fan really but used to take me to Portman Road where we stood in The “Celery Trench”.

Poll: Chopra - do you want him to stay or want him to go?

I remember sitting with my grandmothers lady friend (her husband couldn't make it) in the old chicken run stand and her pointing out Stanley Matthews playing for Stoke in a cup match 63/64. I was about 8 years old and that was probably my 2nd visit to Portman Rd. My first was the season before for a night game against, I think Sheff Wed again with a family friend and ended up with him unable to find me as he left me to go in the childrens turnstile while he went off to the adults and I guess a policeman found me before him as I ended up being picked up from the old police station at the cornhill town hall.

Round about 1960 , Alf Ramsey , Ted Phillips, Ray Crawford etc Wow Wow if either of those got the ball you expected a goal , Ray was a fox in the box and Ted could bang em in from 30 yards .
Happy days and then Bobby and the boys in the 70s . Hopefully a rich Arab will come in .
