I actually like you, you total fooking muppet.

You've just been very silly for the last few days IMO.

If you said things like 'so much of the stuff around the virus and the response to it doesn't add up' and were then accused of saying  'it's all a hoax by the Illuminati' you might wonder what the f@ck was going on!

OK - here is your chance. In full sentences with evidence if possible, explain what doesn't add up about the virus and the response.

I like him as well, and more often than not tend to be on the same side as Harry's morals.

But I can barely make head nor tail of their stances on this subject.

It's all a bit weird.

You get the odd cryptic clue from Bankster which in isolation makes little sense and then pages of stuff from Harry which is really hard work.

Harry, you can't write zillions of words and then complain you're misunderstood mate.

Maybe a few bullet points would be a better starting point.

As it has read so far Badger was well within his rights to submit his post and certainly didn't appear holier than thou or anyone else for that matter. He simply stated facts.

1. Many aspects of the response to this virus don't add up....(e.g. Italian response tonight re carry on working)this is not to say there is not a very real threat especially to certain demographics and those whose usual hospital treatment will be compromised
2.I do not believe Chinese state figures (now 4 days of 0 infections outside of quarantine zone)....but happy to be proved wrong (S Korea also stabilising supposedly)
3.It is not contained in Europe.
4. Media coverage has been sensationalist and contributed to panic.
5. Governments use fear and times of crisis to introduce new (often personal freedom limiting) laws.

I think this covers my 2 OP's but illuminati or something and lots of other stuff I never said or even thought!

My main concern is around the medias propensity to Brass Eye style histrionics so early in the evolution of the virus especially if there is any truth in the claims about 0 new cases in China for 4 days and that the situation in South Korea is levelling out.
Pointing out that current figures are relatively low does not imply denial of potential future exponential growth but it does offer a space to catch ones breath and not presume and encourage reactions based on worse case scenarios.

OK.

1). That's not really giving any examples though? You've given one woolly example about Italians continuing to work (some people have to work) whilst saying many things don't add up. What else doesn't add up?

2). The Chinese figures are irrelevant as discussed earlier. It's also hard to quantify - how many people are they testing? Are they just isolating people and not testing and thus they aren't officially infected? Either way it really doesn't matter so not sure what this point is about.

3). Who said it was? It's all over the media with governments telling people to work towards containment but you've cited that as sensationalist. You can't have it both ways.

4). This has been covered. It's only senationalist if you don't understand the potential of the virus given the r0 and mortality rate and the fact RNA viruses can often mutate quickly.

5). You are making an assumption that something will happen rather than presenting evidence that is it happening or is going to happen.

It's much easier to debate and understand each other when you are more thorough with your answers though :).

I could write one word and the usual suspects would misinterpret it - that's what they do.

However away from the panic stricken bleats there is quite some interesting stuff about the so called Spanish flu of 1917/18. Which suggests it most likely was the combination of many factors coming together.

One being that those with a mild strain remained in the trenches and so that strain was not spread, whereas those with chronic conditions were shipped to hospitals where they spread the stronger strain. And it was not the killer so much as those that it infected were not the most suited to deal with it.

This was pretty much what happened "After the lethal second wave struck in late 1918, new cases dropped abruptly — almost to nothing after the peak in the second wave. In Philadelphia, for example, 4,597 people died in the week ending 16 October, but by 11 November, influenza had almost disappeared from the city."

As to hand washing and "its role has been 'overplayed' is frankly, ignorant." that is yet again an attempt to twist my words. Basic hygene of this nature should be an expectation of us all. The point made was that having a campaign that constantly points out the preventative benefits of this suggests it is not a requirement for a huge number. And it does also allow folk to imagine that this will stop them from catching the virus. A sort of clove of garlic to ward off vampires. It will not.

Much as the anti aircraft guns boomed away in the night over London in autumn 1940 as a reassurance to Londoners that 'something was being done'. As far as posing any danger to night bombers nothing was being done.

That 0 new cases figure is outside Hubei but I agree even that seems unlikely. The key here is that the reduction in cases is because their draconian measures were successful to a degree - lets see what happens when everyone starts mingling again. I don't think it really matters if their figures are truthful or not though.

The problem is your posts over the last few days have read to many people as dismissing the future potential growth of the virus. The reason the media is all over it as is the government is to try an ensure that potential growth is never met.

I find it hard to accept the criticism of the reporting given that.

I genuinely can't tell what side Harry is on most of the time. Sometimes he replies with an essay where i'm fairly sure he agrees but it's difficult to tell.

If you want to take Spanish flu as a case study:

Spanish Flu

r0 = ~2
implied mortality rate = 2-3%

Covid 19

r0 = ~2.5
implied mortality rate = ~3.4% (although this could change and is ~20% in > 80)

We live in a much more connected world now but we also have far better medicine. The reason there is so much attention on the virus and so media focus is to try and ensure that people understand what needs to be done to stop it running out of control. It has the potential to be very bad until a vaccine is created. If lots of media shouting helps to ensure it isn't then that's fine by me.

I was just trying to remember and cover what I put in the 2 threads.....

Panic over...
at 09:46 7 Mar 2020

....only one new case in China outside the quarantined zones!

....so much about this whole thing fails the sniff test!

I am pretty much convinced now...
at 20:29 7 Mar 2020
...that Coronavirus mostly only rears its ugly head on cruise ships. Other than that, especially in China, it is largely contained. In other breaking news the Pope has a cold.
But who knows what I really mean?
Brass Eye....eat your heart out.

1. National and International governance organisations in clunky often contradictory advice...have already expanded a little but add locking people on ships to the list.
2...so we agree about China...who knows
3. Felt to me more like creating an illusion that we could contain it.
4. Seattle is being stalked by Covid19 etc....etc....etc...
5.History suggests that this is what happens...and posted a link today about China increasing surveillance.
