Is this the beginning of the end of days? 15:46 - Mar 12 with 6041 views | BrixtonBlue | Not the virus itself but the knock on effect. Schools closing, global markets crashing, retail businesses will surely take a hammering as people stay in, all of which inevitably leads to mass unemployment, homelessness, anarchy, vigilantism, eating rats to survive and an apocalyptic dystopian wasteland where only the fittest and fastest survive? Or have I seen too many zombie movies?

I am also not sure how your point refers to the response that has been made thus far. He seems to be taking an advice based approach to the problem which is surely a good thing. We might not all agree but it's better than what it could have been. Apparently Hancock is in direct contact with Ashworth according to a Labour MP on TV last night and they are working together on many issues. SB |
Although yesterday there were a number of contributors to radio programmes voicing concern over the lack of preparedness in government because of the lack of medical stafff, facilities and equipment e.g. per head of population the UK has about 1/2 the numbers of intensive care beds that Italy has. & there is insufficient personal equipment for staff & not sufficient testign & protection of front line medical staff is in place. Mr Hunt now chair of the Health Select committee came very close to being very critical of the lack of real action form No10.

There almost certainly will be, but yes, you're watching too many horror films :) Many people still being incredibly blase about the initial public health ramifications, before we even get into the knock-on socioeconomic effects. The UK government's mitigation (e.g. building more ICU capacity) should have started at least a week or two ago. In a couple of months looking back, there will be a lot of anger at the general complacency. They are taking it seriously, but not seriously enough. [Post edited 12 Mar 2020 16:46]

The collapse into recession has been coming for some time now - it was just a case of what would trigger it. The UK is in a particularly bad place because so much of what the the country needs is imported (from infected areas?) that will create a knock on effect across the board. On top of that there is an estimated 4Mn people in the economy who have low wages meanign they can't afford time off (how many are continuing to go to work with colds / flu like symptoms?) and the government sick pay of less than £100 a week is going to do nothing for many who pay more than that in rent. Maybe this will force the much needed re-think on how the UK economy needs to work outside the EU?

The pub next to it is the only one I've ever been to where the beer was utterly undrinkable; tried 3 different sorts of draught and they'd all gone off. An apocalyptic dystopian wasteland indeed. |
My middle son is just finishing a three year posting to the RSigs unit just outside HW. Poor lad. He was 18 when he went there and his gigging hit a wall! Not just that but he can't afford a car! There are some good beaches for waves but that's about it. Thankfully he's off to 2 Para in Colly. One more to the ITFC attendance.
| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.
