Money........What to do 08:43 - Mar 13 with 4461 viewsBlueorder

My mother has recently had 100k dropped into her current account as the result of a property sale. Any ideas where is best to put the money? Thanks.

Big party round Blue Order's mum's house?

100K? That is exactly the right amount of money required to pay the release fees for orphaned UK funds in Nigeria. Send that to me and I will be able to sort out all the necessary bureaucracy to free up funds totalling £5M which will be transferred into your name, or the name of a nominee of your choice.

Probably for now, if you've got a good interest rate current account, that might be your best bet given the climate. Obviously long term you will be able to find a better deal but for right now it might be the best given savings account interest is also through the floor.

Ask on a football message board instead of speaking to a Financial Advisor seems a good idea.

If you leave the money in a plastic bag behind the wheelie bin, I will make sure it is put to good use.

First thing to do is move it to two separate banks as the government only covers 85,000 in each bank through it's scheme.

Once you've done that take your time. At the moment I would think fixed rate bonds would be ideal if you want a stable return. If you want to risk it then the markets are low (but could go lower).

This post is not to be taken as financial advice.

All in my uneducated opinion.

Now? Fill a FTSE100 tracking ISA with the full 20k allowance. Maybe wait a few more days until it hits bottom.

In April, when the Yanks blundering with this virus really hits them and the dollar drops and Dow panics further, buy US stocks with your new ISA allowance.

If you want money set aside for the longer term (5+ years) then invest in the Far East. It's cheaper at the moment, but if you follow the population demographics this is where the growth will occur, not Europe/UK/US where our population is ageing and the growth little more than inflationary.

But remember, in the long run we are all dead....

Any debts? Pay them off.

Maybe children's debts, too? Depends what her long-term financial plans are.

Split the dosh, too, as already mentioned, to below £85k.

Consider Premium Bonds (if she doesn't mind that it's gambling) as prizes are tax-free. 1-in-24,500 chance of winning, 99.3% chance of winning something if £10k held. She doesn't have to hold them forever.

Investement in a managed portfolio ? I'd wait at the moment.

Investment in a company if there are some benefits to an investment that your mum might use. Lots of examples, but Next for 100 shares you get 25% off one purchase voucher ... Adnams shareholders get Privilege Card, giving 15% off purchases in Adnams stores ...

How about information-averaging, THEN going to a financial planner more aware of what your options are ?

Does she fancy putting the money towards Lambert's pay-off for failing to get us in the play offs? The less money ME has to shell out himself the more likely he is to pull the trigger.

Immediately split it between two bank accounts or building society accounts with institutions covered under separate banking licenses, this insures it up to the full value. This is important bearing in mind the volatility in the markets and the economy at the moment.

Outside of that, pay for financial advice (up front payment to two or three advisers) and see what they can offer.
