I hope his press conference tomorrow puts some strong business and vulnerable people support in place. Although I have no idea what could be done at this point. It’s political unchartered territory.

Why can’t we just have all the info now? Or is this like a Netflix series with a cliffhanger at the end of every episode? What’s episode 3? More information about the pumps teaser?

"The science changed" - Possibly the best cover up for being wrong and throwing the country to the wolves I've ever heard.

As I said, if anyone wants to follow the blind please do. The rest of us with common sense can carry on challenging them.

I asked MrsN her take on this.

She’s a midwife.
She went to a Corbyn rally in Newcastle.
She thinks Corbyn will have handled this better.

She has said that Boris isn’t doing terribly. That the changing science is normal. That accepting the Chinese figures would have been wrong and validating data correct.

I’ll go with her on this, rather than questioning the integrity of the Chief Medical Officer and his motives based upon the government he is supporting.

I’m not blindly following anything. I am engaging my brain and using my common sense logically.

They did the right thing changing course, I even said that yesterday myself.

I admit supporting business is needed.

But bloody hell it would be nice to feel a bit more secure from my position. And as I said I’m hardly struggling. I’m not even top of the wrung of where we need to look to next.

I still fear we’re not being strict enough with social measures though. What evidence are they basing lock down and closing choices on? It should be an easy question to answer and one we can see the data for.

If the editor of the Lancet is correct, the science hasn’t changed. There was published information available 7 weeks ago that highlighted the potential severity at a level similar to the new Imperial study. What’s changed is the source of information used by the government leading to a different decision. If this is indeed the case (and it appears to be) that’s up to 7 weeks lost to a wrong approach.

Looks like there’s a little bit of spin going on for damage control and the media are mostly buying into it. That’s to be expected.

It’s done. People just need to accept that there’s good evidence the government got it wrong and move on. That’ll be difficult for some as we’re still suffering from the divisive last few years.

Hopefully the government will improve from now on. It’s in all our interests that they do, and that we also help where we can. The financial packages mentioned this afternoon seem to be a good start.

I don’t think releasing data to the public will help.

They are trying not to panic people, especially considering the goings on in the supermarkets.

As I’ve said previously, the time for evaluation is when we are over this. Then we can hold people to account. The Chief Medical Officer is a very experienced, highly trained, clever man. Let’s let him do his job. He won’t be making decisions knowing he’s going to kill people. He‘ll be doing what he thinks is best to limit fatalities.

Dunno, I’d think coming out on Friday to say “some people are going to die but we’ve got the magical answer despite going against the rest of the world and the WHO” before backtracking 3 days later was a pretty good way to panic people.

I genuinely dread to think how much damage limitation could have been wasted this weekend.

Where to start? Surely you have your own list of uncertain things with no clarification you’d like to know too? The info we are being fed is pants.

Business support. Feeding less advantaged when schools shut. Income support. Time frame estimates for as long as can be predicted for now. Why aren’t we testing more? Why are schools open when gatherings are banned.

I could go on.

Agreed.

I've acknowledged previously that I was mistaken on this thread. I wanted to believe they were following the science and I still think at the time there were a lot of unknowns so that argument could be made. Just copying other countries might not have been right.

In hindsight I was wrong and they clearly screwed it up and the eventual investigation which should happen will hopefully bring all the issues up which can then be answered for.

TBF you did SB. That’s why I still engage with you.

I’d hope in recent months we’ve seen better sides in addressing each other and leaving preconceived contexts of past engagement at the front door.

Shame I can’t say the same for a few others, some I’d had a some level of respect for the opinion of, prior to last year.

What a mess. From top to bottom. This wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg, and I think we’re some of the way off.

And yeah credit where it’s due for vaccine rollout but also I’m sure if the Tories had a way to privatise and profit on that front they’d have done so at our expense.

It defeats the long term point to celebrate the odd win when Paul Lambert is still your manager.

I really wanted Corbyn to succeed but it was clear he was done. Largely his own making as well. Yes the media went after him but he gave them ammunition.

I think Starmer is surprising a lot of people with how little he's actually doing.

I think this government will basically bear the brunt of the blame from the party (note, not the country) and slink off into the sunset once this has all blown over, with possibly a backbencher like Javid or Hunt becoming PM - depending how the Remainer v Leave debate is standing at that time.
