I hope his press conference tomorrow puts some strong business and vulnerable people support in place. Although I have no idea what could be done at this point. It’s political unchartered territory.

Why can’t we just have all the info now? Or is this like a Netflix series with a cliffhanger at the end of every episode? What’s episode 3? More information about the pumps teaser?

So where do you think kids are safest? At school or out roaming the streets or in supermarkets with their parents?

Would you be happy if someone told you that x% of the frontline services had to be taken offline too early because the parents were at home looking after their kids (the least vulnerable people in our society)rather than looking after the most vulnerable people in our society? Look at the bigger picture not just what is in front of your nose

We are looking at the bigger picture. The bigger picture is we are the 5th largest economy in the developed world and we shouldn’t need to be debating whether front line staff have the infrastructure to do their job properly. It should be a given they do.

Where to start? Surely you have your own list of uncertain things with no clarification you’d like to know too? The info we are being fed is pants.

Business support. Feeding less advantaged when schools shut. Income support. Time frame estimates for as long as can be predicted for now. Why aren’t we testing more? Why are schools open when gatherings are banned.

It is good that we’ve (partially) changed tack now, albeit belatedly. However, plenty of people who know about these things knew we were taking the wrong approach. And then when people on here tried to point that out, they got shouted down by a stock ‘follow the science’ response, when the government weren’t following good science, as now proven.

So you go for it Callis. The government have been useless and their incompetence may well have lead to extra deaths. Even in an attempt to move towards doing the right thing, their switch yesterday hangs some of the most financially vulnerable people out to dry. They’ve a chance to put that right today and hopefully they’ll take it.

Oh, and she can’t answer the schools question because there’s an inconsistency in their approach still. The only answer she could give was ‘we haven’t got enough capacity in front line services to deal with kids being off too’.

I agree, for whatever reason, whatever models we were using were differing in opinion to the people who were saying this was not going to work. It looks like whatever new evidence it is (news is suggesting this ICL report) is now saying the same thing and they've switched tactics.

I'm sure questions will be asked as to what is was specifically that changed their minds. It's right to criticise them when they've done wrong, and I'm not really getting involved in the "that's political point scoring" arguments as I think they are just a way of shutting people down, personally.

However I do think that this is a fooking hard thing to make decisions about when they are talking about locking the whole country down for months. I doubt the governmental scientific advisers are playing this fast and loose.

You're right also about the effect this is going to have on every day working people. I don't really know how people are going to get by on universal credit, or how businesses that have things like warehouses are supposed to continue to operate.

I guess we'll find out more today with the budget things.

EDIT: And just one final thing, for me, I have absolutely no expertise as to say which scientists are right and wrong, which makes this extra hard to seriously evaluate.

Indeed, I just heard on the local news that Ambluance staff ferrying patients are not only not told what infections the patient has but they have no protective clothing an have been told to wash their uniforms at home.

Yes, they have to be balanced, but keeping kids in school isn’t for safety. Keeping schools open was the cornerstone of the previous approach to spread the disease and build up immunity. An approach the government has since said it isn’t following, even though it still is partially. As I said, the NHS hasn’t the capacity to lose workers to look after their kids. That’s the real issue, not kids safety.

The bigger problem is that front line personnel are NOT being tested so if a front line catches the virus their child(ren) could infect the entire school - think about it.

I feel like even with my anxieties it’s a collective responsibility to get answers. Probably not doing myself a favour mentally no, but at this point I believe this information needs to spread far and wide.

Anyone with the same issues needs to take their own route to find comfort. The internet may not be the best place for everyone.

I think that's the key thing they've not really explained, although they briefly touched on it with yesterdays briefing.

Because the risk is so low for children, the good outweighs the bad. Better to have them there than have them all at home meaning you take even more people out of work, especially as you say people like health workers.

Callis I dont disagree with many of your points, and absolutely the govts response should be challenged rather than us blindly following it (indeed they have already reversed a seemingly distasterous policy)

And I have no problem with the political points, when the time is right.

But my genuine advice, is consider whether this is doing your mental health any good? Cos if it isnt, then you need to prioritise your wellbeing. I speak as someone with some experience of mental health issues and learning to put yourself first is far more important than winning at interent argument.

And to those desperate to argue with you, I'd simply say lay off the lad. He is clearly anxious/agitated and cutting Callis some slack would be a nice thing to do.

Thats me for this thread, too much social media isnt good for me either!

Yes, very hard to make such big decisions and easy to criticise.

Your edit is key. Science is an approach that helps evolves knowledge. It’s never absolute in time. It requires openness and challenge by the scientific community to build confidence. Alarm bells rang for me when the government wouldn’t share data they were basing their decisions were on, so other scientists could evaluate. The public don’t know enough to evaluate the approach to this, but other relevant scientists do - when they’re excluded, everyone should ask why. The government haven’t been science-led, they’ve been almost anti-science.

No. I think you are wrong, as for Callis I haven't really commented that much on his stance, needless to say I think he's acting like a bit of a knob. I am sure he thinks I am one too.

Over the past year or two we have had many heated arguments on here over politics and although you may disagree it's as plain as day that Callis is using a worldwide pandemic to scream like a kid.

Many in the anti Boris camp are looking at this with a greater deal of balance and it's warming to see a sort of togetherness. We are in uncharted waters and we all need to support each other, support actions directed by the government experts and deal with things like grown ups.

Boris Johnson does not lay in his bed deciding what route to take in the morning, government relies on expert advice and from day one it has been advised that things will change and move as we go on. Individuals of course can also take their own actions.

There may be time for reflection down the line but I'm frankly sick of Armchair Anarchists.
