PC / Laptop Health Program 16:56 - Mar 17 with 1602 views | Samuelowen88 | TWTD Hive mind. With the current situation both I and the wife are potentially having to work from home at the same time. We've dug out an old laptop, which is working fine other than being incredibly slow. Have done an fresh install on Win10 on it, but still rather slow. Does anyone have any recommendations of things to try? Any good software that will fix fix any issues (free would be great ) TIA

I've got nothing with less than 8GB even on a smallish laptop. Might not make a difference if it's a tiny processor, but RAM's the normal place to look for a quick boost to speed.

More so than RAM? Just used a computer scanner that suggests RAM to 8GB and SSD Assume changing to SSD isnt easy? Would have to install windows again from boot? So would need a CD?

Both is preferable, but the SSD Upgrade would make the most difference. Yes, a re-install in definitely the best option if you have a method to install. The physical installation isnt too bad, normally a youtube video to help..

Agree with this - SSD first, RAM 2nd. Also, not mentioned here - what browser have you been using, and how is your connection to 'tinternet ? A fresh browser-install might help - try Opera or Firefox, for example. AdBlock might speed up browsing, too; and running a malware check might reveal system resources being over-used by malware. And if you are wireless, higher latency might be causing some problems: get hardwired if possible. Try these before new hard drive (though you did say your Win10 was fresh install). Do you have a second computer ? If not, then you'll need to have a hard copy for instructions for Operating System (OS) installation (as you might lose access to 'tinternet until it's installed). Also, before you start pulling it apart, get a Boot-CD made for an alternative OS (Ubuntu ? Mint ?) just in case your Windows install goes wrong or comes to a dead end. You should be able to use the original hard drive, but ... [Post edited 17 Mar 2020 19:55]

PC / Laptop Health Program on 20:02 - Mar 17 with 1387 views | Pinewoodblue | This should be your employers problem, they should be providing you with the tools you need to work from home. All you need to worry about is if your broadband speed it up to it. My sister starts working from home tomorrow and left home this evening with a brand new laptop set up with everything she will need.

PC / Laptop Health Program on 20:36 - Mar 17 with 1363 views | WicklowBlue | It all depends on what you have installed on it. Remove any software you don't need, including Dell stuff. Make sure you have a good antivirus program installed, I swear by AVG free has kept various systems over her going over the years. But other peeps may suggest otherwise.. Go to support.dell.com and ensure you have everything updated, bios/drivers etc. Hit up task manager and figure out what is consuming CPU/mem usage (ctrl alt delete and select task manager). Another 4 gig if ram would help and shouldn't be that difficult to install. Deffo update to the latest version of chrome and if your work allows consider moving to gsuite rather than MS Office. Everything we do in work is cloud based and although they issue a MacBook Pro, I really only need chrome on a device to work. Hope that helps.
PC / Laptop Health Program on 21:27 - Mar 17 with 1337 views | bournemouthblue | Obviously it depends what you may need in terms of programs but an SSD and even a dual booting it with Linux Ubuntu or Linux Mint if you prefer a more Windows like layout will get a bit more speed out of it
