AnyTWTD virus job losses yet? 08:48 - Mar 19 with 6281 viewsartsbossbeard

We had a briefing yesterday when Boss Man has hit the panic button and advised that the company can't continue to operate at current levels if new projects/customers aren't buying.

Funnily enough, he was using a dashboard/data model that I helped create to prove his point, so no doubt it's flawed, however, his point stands. Myself and one other have offered to take 6-8wks unpaid leave (rather me than some young lad with family and hefty mortgage) and he's mulling that over but admitted that this might not be enough.

Plenty of part time jobs at supermarkets I'm hearing.

Anyone else in the same boat??

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Complete opposite for us. Enforced overtime is a matter of when, rather than if. Thoughts with those struggling to pay the bills. I feel very fortunate to work for the health service, even though it will get very tiring soon.

I still have work for now (on my own, in an empty building), but if and when the builders merchants have all shut, then I will have to stop.

I could lay off myself. Working is a lot of effort RN.

But not sure, I had a reassuring call with a client yesterday who sells products that will still be necessities at this time.

The main job I'm on RN is 4 days a week for a cryptocurrency affiliate business and traffic is doing okay (there's a lot of news to write up on Bitcoin right now) but if the economy is fecked it's going to decrease the likelihood of conversions. I may be able to use the fact I (along with a couple of other digital marketing contractors) were hired as an interim to get the websites and processes in place, with the aim of phasing us out in April for direct hires, to get kept on longer. But, how is anyone going to hire right now? My contract there is until mid-April but if things somehow keep ticking over steady enough I may ask to stay on, potentially at a reduced day rate if needed, just to be safe.

I've got a couple of proposals to do as well over the weekend, one of them is a paid for proposal for a strategy/analysis, and the other is a pitch and estimate for a potential job. I may need to send some emails out today to check there is still financial and economic reasoning for them that my services would be worthwhile. More of a safety precaution to ensure I am not losing too much time working on stuff that isn't going to help me in the short term (whereas before I wouldn't have minded as I tend to think long term).

I hope I'll be okay but I get the feeling I'm going to have to drop my lowest threshold for my rates to get through it.

I'm quite lucky as I'm a support worker for disabled people, so I'm unaffected in terms of unemployment. All the best to everyone else though - if anyone else happens to be in the Penzance area and needs any help with anything then give me a shout, as per the other thread

Mrs H and I both work for charities.

I've been putting together a business resilience piece for the our industry. Our boss is booked in for webinars to lots of firms on a pro bono basis. Hopefully there will be income to keep the coffers topped-up.

I know we are funded for the next 18 months and I've bought in enough to cover my section.

Mrs H, unsure. They are funded and not reliant on external income.
We've gone onto a discretionary spending freeze.

Edit: Just had a conf call and we are secure for 12 months. A relief. Lots of new ideas about how to help beneficiaries and firms in the automotive industry.

One positive is that we can change and adapt easily. Not fixed to one product or service.
It's really got my ideas flowing and feeling chipper about how we can do more for others.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

The virus may actually work the other way for me and keep me in a job longer as I work at a private mental health hospital which is being purchased by the NHS. I was told I would be employed until the end of September but the virus is slowing the transition massively.

At the moment we still seem to be getting on fine (portable accommodation industry). That said, us a business we are never crazy busy, nor are we ever seriously quiet, so things still seem normal for us at the minute. I do expect to receive calls shortly from people wishing to stop the hire of cabins etc for a few weeks to see how things play out, which might put us in a tricky position (although not to the point of job losses).

Good on you though ABB. As a young lad with a mortgage, these can be very uncertain times (although I'm in a very fortunate position with my job, plus my boss is an absolute diamond).

I started my new job just over two weeks ago and now working from home as of yesterday. The problem is that as I was based in two different locations, spending half days at each, I was in essence, only at each place just over a week in terms of hours worked. I'm IT support for a university, so I can remotely access things, only there's not much work for me at present as everyone is setup to work remotely and my knowledge of things is limited as you'd expect only being in a workplace for so little time.

I'm hoping I'll be okay as the uni is fairly well off and I can envision more IT stuff being implemented. Still, slightly concerned that if it does go all tits up...

We are still on a big contract but only 5 weeks to go, our next one has been paused as has everything else with that client

Which leaves us with domestic work, that seems to have slowed right down so we'll have to see in a few weeks where we are. Not something we've really broached as yet but will need to soon

The irony (maybe not the best word in this situation) is a Grandson works for a haulage firm who 4 months ago were discussing possibly having to make people redundant because trade was slow, they're so busy now they're talking about hiring more people.

It will quieten down at some point in the near future I'm sure but once this has all come to an end all our client base should have a large pot of money they'll reinvest into thier estates.

Well said Sir.

We're doing so me resilience work for clients. First thing is keep your staff as long as possible. They'll repay you in spades.

Nice to see a boss caring.

I feel sorry for all those who have lost their jobs because of this.
I also feel for those who have been told to go home because they are non-essential staff.
Imagine being classified as non-essential. They don't really need you.

We have plans to add a new office and headcount, clearly that's paused for the moment while we go through this.

We have quite a good spread of clients in multiple sectors, not many in hospitality or leisure which looks like its going to take a bit of a battering. Nothing guaranteed but I am at least able to focus on directing the business and still offering top levels of customer service as opposed to worrying where the next few quid is coming from. My time at home working is likely to be spent on all those time consuming policy/process writing documents, scenario planning and keeping the house in order.

We have a good team, will spend every last available penny to keep us all together.

Balls, sorry to hear that.

We'll be in trouble eventually, ok for now though. Depends if there's any relief for the Universities. Not holding my breath on that. We've already seen a big hit from Brexit on projects and the demographic dip in 18 year olds on intake; this on top will have major ramifications. There's still much we don't know around forms of assessment for A levels and how that will all play out wrt next year's intake.

I’m interested in how productiveness and incentives will impact morale too. Most people are uncertain and worried. Even my housemate who is perhaps too chill for his own good said yesterday he’s starting to take it seriously now (as he should).

But as with most stress scenarios, it can really impact the ability to do your job well.

I don’t have the answers really. I’ve just been told by my main contract they should be okay as the business is steady and as a purely online entity where the only thing they produce is content there is no reason it should affect them (and actually stock/currency movements can have a positive impact on bottom line). I’ve put myself out there as I said above and I’ve said it would be good to work something out with them to carry on my contract longer.

Lastnight I sent my mate who got laid off 2 weeks ago (unrelated to COVID) £30 just to make sure she has food and essentials. I feel like as I’m doing okay right now I should be supporting those who have been there for me in times of crisis, be it money/health/mind/socialising/whatever. If I could do that (and more) for everyone in the country I would in a heartbeat.

My boss gave me a month's notice three weeks ago that I was being made redundant. That was before all this really kicked off so finding another job is going to be tricky. I had an interview three weeks ago and was told that they want to get me back for a second but that's gone rather quiet.

Had a chat on the phone yesterday about another I had applied for. They were intended to proceed with the hiring process unless things really take a downward turn in terms of the government restricting movements.

When I leave my current job next week I will look for a new one and make myself available for any local initiatives to help those in quarantine/isolation.

My Mrs got laid off from Stanstead on tuesday. Poor thing is in bits.
We have one off at the moment and the rest have jobs to go to at the moment but we've had several jobs cancelled and the phone doesn't ring.
We have a couple of jobs ongoing but things will get tough over the next couple of weeks.
Will look at it day by day.
