Ruddy hell.

What a bitter old hag.
Clearly she thinks she has all the answers or is just another twisted hack throwing bricks at anyone with whose politics she doesn't get.

Dig a hole love and don't stop. She should go get a hug from that other national prig, Ant Middleton.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

A typical modern journalist gives opinions but no answers. She talks about Bojo aging I'm not surprised given the situation the country/world is in, probably only getting 2 hours sleep a night while she's comfortable at home having 8 hours of sleep.
Trouble is people like her actually think she's living in a Hollywood movie and this whole situation is a joke and Brad Pitt is going to find the cure.
Lazy journalist.

Too many people using this crisis to settle old scores and prejudice imo.

Noting wrong with fair and constructive criticism but it's noticeable, with a few surprisingly honourable exceptions, that most of those criticising Johnson's actions, style and handling of this situation are the same anti Johnson/Tory mob.

He may not be the PM that many of us want but he is the PM that all of us have.

There will plenty of time, when this crisis is over, to hold a public inquiry of the government's handling of this but now isn't the time to score points for the sake of it.

She's giving a view on Johnson's leadership, or lack thereof. No issue there.

Johnson's need to lie is ingrained. He knows no other way. To think our country is under that clowns command at one of the most critical times in our history is as scary as the virus itself. The thing that is ageing him by the day is that his wiggle room for lying has been stripped back to virtually zero. He's like a robot programmed to do only one thing only and it's sprarking and smoking and glitching cos it can't handle a different task. He didn't sign up for this. He thought this was going to be a year of going around spouting glib phrases about Brexit. He thought this year he would be carried on high on the shoulders of the right wing press as their champion, the nations hero as he "got Brexit done".

I think it's a bit harsh.

This is a once-in-a-century event and I am sure the government are extremely busy trying to cope. If some of the communication is a bit waffling then that's better than them spending ages on delivery and no time on execution. The situation is constantly moving, many world leaders haven't been clear. The other day Macron said there would be no lockdown then implemented a total lockdown 6 hours later.

Boris is far from perfect but he is what we have at the moment and the Tories are trying to get things done in a constantly moving situation. I don't think this type of stuff is particularly helpful.

SB

There is a decent length press conference on this every day. The guy is clearly getting about 3 hours sleep a day during an international pandemic that changes hugely every 6 hours.

History will judge him kindly if he can get through this with the country in some semblance of economic and public order.

I did like the Indiana Jones reference.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Like most of her articles it's funny and well written. However, its main flaw is the flaw of most Guardian opinion pieces, its total lack of self awareness. There is an irony to lambasting someone for being middle class when addressing the Guardian readership.

Big missing of the point from you there though.

Criticism is one thing, calling her a 'bitter old hag' and then 'love' in a condescending tone isn't really criticism.

Not really true though.

A number of posters have been able to say that he's doing a decent job in constantly changing circumstances whilst also pointing out they don't like him and he's a fool.

The two things are not mutually exclusive.

There may be an enquiry, but I bet they won't release the report

I think he's doing a shocking job on the comms. He can't talk straight or sometimes sensibly. Such as saying he'd been around the hospital shaking everyone's hand. Ridiculously stupid thing to do and say - it was campaigning mode stuff.

The difference between him and some other leaders has been very noticeable. Sturgeon gave a good interview yesterday I saw. Very clear. Sunak also showed him how it's done.

I like the idea of Larry Brilliant - appoint a Conovirus czar to do all the comms/coordination. Someone who holds the respect of ministers and relevant involved professionals alike. Scratching my head to think who, but there's no reason it has to be Boris bumbling through the daily updates/questions.

The government in general have pulled their act together though this week. Belatedly, but that's largely irrelevant know. They still need to do more on protecting the most vulnerable financially, with some form of guaranteed income for self-employed who can't work any more. Based on what's happened in other countries they'll also need to introduce more strict containment measures, but it looks like they're slowly getting there on that too.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Okay, what do you think of Max Hastings as a journalist.

Hastings? Having very briefly read the piece I'll take a while to think it over.

Hmmm, you just compared Sir Bobby Robson, noted for his integrity, to a known serial liar.
Interesting choice.

It isn’t whatabouterry.

You insulted a journalist for a piece that is negative about Boris Johnson.

Let’s see what you say about another journalist, that writes a negative piece about Johnson.

Not really.
He wrote a piece on BJ. I would suggest his tone was what one would expect.

She just spits bile. Hence my tone. If she had written in a measured manner then maybe I would have just let it pass by. Her tone was one of a spiteful old hag.

Ahhh good so when Max says things like

“He cares for nothing but his own fame and gratification”

“Like many showy personalities, he is of weak character”

“He has long been considered a bully, prone to making cheap threats.”

“ Almost the only people who think Johnson a nice guy are those who do not know him”

It is not spiteful bile.

But something like this:

“There’s something unsettling in seeing the prime minister repurpose his Brexit media strategy for a deadly contagion”

“The key message,” Johnson key-messaged on Tuesday, is that people follow the advice “sedulously”. Ah, sedulously. Sedulously. The signal for 10 million hardworking families to draw down the leather-bound thesaurus from their shelves and browse synonyms for the word “tw@t”.

“Johnson prefers to chuck new soundbites on the pile”

Is spiteful bile.

If you read the advice given to Government about how to communicate to the public, and compare that to what Johnson has being doing, her article is not spiteful, it is accurate and inline with expert advice. And also consistent with the description of Boris Johnson by Max.

You still have flies in your eyes.
