Is this a symptom of the nation's poor/fragile mental health?

After the shocks of Credit Crunch, Austerity, Brexit and now Covid-19 (that last dropping like a bolt out of the blue), was it all too much for people to take?

Discuss.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Top point.

Buy what you need. We are. It's not hard to pop into the shops every two or three days and top-up.

The only we need to lock down is crap tv shows, GMT and the like. Get those who watch that trash into listening to R4.

It's not poss to "pop into the shops every two or three days and top-up." when you're 70+, 12 miles from shops & in enforced lockdown.

Neighbour kindly brought me things off my list this a.m; could only find about 1/3rd of what I'd asked for. No specialist bread available & I can't eat regular bread (allergies). Luckily have some in freezer (stockpiled? I call it planning ahead). Next shopping in will be Waitrose delivery a week today (first available slot when ordered 12th March).

Bully makes the point elsewhere on the thread.

Also depends on what you mean by panic buying. Making sure you have enough bog roll for a few weeks is patently very sensible when there are shortages and have been for days.

Same for any item that is in short supply. I saw and purchased 2 boxes of paracetamol yesterday. I had none in the cupboard and need none. But I might in the future so it makes sense to get some when I saw them, knowing there have been shortages.

It is the hoarders - making sure they have months of supply who are the t*ssers imho.

Yup, see people buying all the beer except the Corona.

Also got more annoyed than usual at all the panic buying this morning because people had not only taken all the standard pasta, but have now decided to move onto the gluten free pasta.

Please leave the free from range for people who actually need it folks.

I know you live close to me but I (surprisingly) perhaps found well stocked shops and plenty of choice in Wollaton and Beeston but if you and your infant had a dose of the trots you’d both be in trouble as toilet paper and nappies were just represented by empty shelves.
Where was the panic you saw?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Which, unless you were literally down to your last roll, was never likely. Responding to a panic with panic is not the best way to go.

'responding to panic with panic' is almost getting back to the subject of Guthrum's original post. Polly Toynbee was the first I heard use the phrase 'race to the bottom' (oddly appropriate when your post mentions toilet roll) in a long ago broadcast of 'Question Time' back when it had occasional flashes of interesting content. A downward spiral, both in terms of tenure of employment and tenant's rights (as well as 'Question Time' itself). But the answer may not be just in the last couple of decades, 'The Downward Spiral' was a Nine Inch Nails album from 1994 and the decline in Trent Reznor's mental state the main subject but one of the recurring themes in early 1990s grunge and post punk was the materialistic cage that the young of the time had no escape from. I had this explained to me by an American girl I sat next to on a train as she detailed the joy and momentary release that helping to trash all the merchandising stalls at the hippy capitalist Woodstock II gave her.

So, returning a little to the main theme with that in mind, I have to wonder as well as the dog eat dog desperation of grabbing all you can for yourself, this panic buying is all a way that a perceived underclass has of getting back at a system that is boxing them in and that they do not trust.

As I said earlier, the 'underclass' can't afford to buy three to six months' worth of food in one shop so I don't think the hoarding is on them.

Dear Herbivore,

I did not post a refutation to your post immediately but chose to sleep (fitfully) overnight upon it.

Firstly, thanks for keeping on topic...

Secondly, and less acidly, I accept that my analysis is crude and even a bit 'Benefits Street' but I wanted to open out the thread and re-engage with the subject and spirit of Guthrum's original post. Over the course of history there have been many instances of collective madness - the millenarianism of Manichaeism as well as that of Islam and Christianity when persecuting that sect, the extremes of puritanism and monarchy during the civil wars that racked Britain four hundred years ago, the disturbing acceptance of the Nazis in an otherwise rich and socially advanced set of Germanic cultures suffering from the defeat in a World War as well as depression and hyper inflation.

Has the World lost a fair amount of collective reason in a tide of thinking that puts undue emphasis on acquisitiveness and frantic activity, thinking that could be traced back to texts like Bernard Mandeville's 'The Fable of the Bees' or Theodore Roosevelt's 'The Strenuous Life'? So I am not having a dig at millennials or a Momentum led Labour Party (whose policies can be seen as submitting to neo-Capitalism whilst using it as something to 'kick against') specifically but want to see if there is either a normal or a normalised consensus about what has been going wrong.

Thankfully I don't have an infant!

This has mainly been around Beeston Co-ops, and the Tesco and Lidl in the town centre. Oh and Marks and Spencers near Attenborough, tried that on Friday and it was pretty bad as well.

Hoping it'll calm down in a few days. We have easily enough to get by. Just never thought I'd see the day where people are buying gluten free pasta out of choice.

Although amusingly they were not taking the gluten free bread.

It's completely wrong to label this 'panic buying'.It's simply selfish, thoughtless people responding to instructions from a thoughtless government that at no point has prepared for this - nor thought about the consequences of their advice or instructions. It might even be people just looking after themselves.

The government tell the hospitality industry to wnd down - and are surprised that a million people instantly lose their jobs - forcing them to act the next day. We are governed by idiots who never realised that cuts have consequences, nor that even now, their own idiocy also has consequences. Four flights coming in from Milan today to jeathrow alone -for example... and one from Iran

People are told to stay at home, self isolate for weeks and months. They know it is going to get much, much worse - they might not be able to get out in a few weeks time so of course given the government advice will buy in a stock of food - for themselves and others.

The only way to get through this is to buy little and often - like we used to do. The government should have been preaching this for the last three months - and prepared the supply chain for the difficulties ahead.

I had to go shopping three times yesterday... once for my elderly neighbour in isolation, once for myself - and a third time for my son and pregnant girlfriend in isolation... I cant imagine I am the only one facing this and it is only going to get worse.

Man has gained control of this planet largely by being a selfish animal. Originally, life was all about obtaining enough food to eat and while society has progressed a long way since then, man still has an inherent streak of selfishness as it was the selfish who survived and thus were able to breed. In the current situation, people feel threatened and the basic survival/selfish motivation kicks in.
Panic buying clearly creates its own mentality once it starts - people see the pictures of empty shelves and bulging trolleys and think there won't be anything left for them unless they do the same.

So years of, mainly, state sponsored education and innumerable initiatives to socialise individuals evaporate the moment a remote threat appears? It seems this is true of some but not many, so I think we do have to engage with a more widespread psychological malaise such as the one Guthrum considered.
