Continuing my way through season 4 of the The Sweeney 11:53 - Mar 25 with 4499 viewsIllinoisblue

Numerous references to honkys and spades. Amazing to think this was a prime time show.

See also the early 70s Terry Sneed novels by GF Newman where representations of the police moved on from George Dixon types and reflected some of the bent copper cases at the time. The Sweeney also showed that the police didn't always get their man.

It seems funny now but as a kid it was one of those programmes I was allowed to watch.

It wasn't full-on adult, get-sent-to-bed kinda stuff, but maybe somewhere in between.

You know, if you played up you didn't get to stay up, but if you kept quiet enough they might almost forget you're there.

You were being gradually introduced to big changing times in your life.

It's happening again now.

I bought the DVD off Amazon when you mentioned it before, had forgotten all about it, one to watch if I do end up having to sit at home going stir crazy.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Our finest cop drama, filmed on location which gives it the realism, as someone said, in a London that doesn’t exist anymore. For a real culture shock, the Alf Garnet film ‘Alfs Back’ is an eye opener. Great scene with George Best, Bobby Moore, and Max Bygraves though!

I love watching it, plus old episodes of Minder.

Proper London doesn't exist anymore.

Also featuring some of the most brilliant character actors, who we all grew up with, often playing against type. Arthur English, Diana Dors, loads of comedy actors in serious roles. The one where the escaped convict is hiding out in the woods getting ready for Regan spooked me as a kid, still looks great now!
