The Lord must have a sense of humour on 18:22 - Apr 7 by Steve_M | I think that's because , reverting perhaps to the pre-enlightenment thinking of their antecedents, a number of religious leaders have openly proclaimed that their faith will protect the godly. It's different to, for example, the UK government and associated Westminster institutions where a rather relaxed attitude allowed infection to spread rapidly. |
I think there's also a tendency in the ultra-orthodox groups to not mix at all so they assume that their chances of infection will be lower anywhere, a sort of extra layer of trying to rationalise their choices. Same can be said of people whose lives are encapsulated by the church circles they move in. One thing which did shock me from some of the teachers was the defending of the televangelist who did that bizarre exorcism of COVID-19. They tried to say it was an expression of faith and not capitalism, which seemed a stretch even for the most sympathetic interpretation of channelling the gospels etc. | |
