So that leaves a presidential face-off between two of America's most senile men.
The election stuff has been understandably pushed to the back burner but there's a cruel, sad irony in the wretched state of US healthcare being laid bare by a pandemic whilst a candidate who has dedicated his political career and ran for president on a platform to change that has been bullied out of the race by an establishment that wanted to protect its own interests.
Not to say he was faultless in every way but it's a real shame that someone with genuine care and compassion for the lives of everyday people will never reach the ultimate goal. In fact I don't think anyone will, there are just too many people in higher places to ever let that happen. And the stupid thing is Bernie isn't even *that* radical, he just threatens the status quo.
Obviously he's not dead and can still battle on the senate floor (and has already helped put assurances into bills that should aid Americans during this crisis better than they would have been) but he'll still have the Joe Bidens of the world standing in his way.
I hope his message and his movement fights on, but it'll be hard pushed to find a better standard-bearer. |  |

He takes every opportunity to swipe at his political opponents even in these times and his entire strategy I think is about getting re-elected. He’s not that much of one really, particularly compared to other countries’ definitions. I’m not so sure that that’s why Trump praises him. The pair of them both rally against ‘the establishment’, although of course Trump is very much part of it, and Trump sees that establishment attacking and stopping Bernie progressing and sees it as unfair. Maybe he likes him because he’s seen him speak on Fox News, which seems to be his reasoning for most things. | |

Sanders and Corbyn have at least challenged the status quo in the two developed Western countries that show the least understanding of health and wellbeing as a key metrics.
It's cruelly ironic that Coronavirus has done much of the job for them. Although the policy of giving money to companies rather than individuals, and boosting markets, does suggest that the belief in the trickle-down effect is still a driving force.
Rather than the cost and risk being shared around equitably, it's individual people and their families that are going to end up picking the tab for this. |  |

Sanders's politics are interesting & unusual in a country which has never "done socialism" & it could arguably have some appeal when the ordinary man's life has been getting relatively worse. But also hard to see a 78 year old having huge broad appeal. So the 77 years old Biden can battle with the 73 years old Trump. What is it about US politicians - they just refuse to go away? |  |
