Football League are considering regionalising L1 & L2 in to North / South..... 12:16 - Apr 22 with 3374 viewsITFC_Forever

I can see the logic in that from a financial point of view.... but the gap in quality between the top and bottom of each division will be bigger, a decent L1 side would make mincemeat of the bottom dwellers of L2.

And it will help and hinder those trying to complete the 92.... much less chance of getting to northern grounds yet to be ticked off. But I guess the perennial L2 teams yet to be down in the south will be easier to get to.

And that's assuming we would be put in the south half of the split.... Lowestoft got lumped in to the north.

Wouldn’t that essentially just be going about 60 years back in time?

Can’t see it going ahead

Wasn't this just a suggestion by the Fleetwood chairman that doesn't like travelling to Gillingham on a Tuesday night? Didn't think it was actually being considered?

I can see it as a very real possibility.

The longer there is no football and the less cash clubs have, the more any opportunity to reduce costs will appeal.
Hotels for overnight stays and fuel for the coach might be relatively small amounts for some clubs, but for the smaller ones, it would be a noticable enough sum to make it worth it.

There's an article in the Daily Heil today reviving the idea, and suggesting that L1/2 clubs are in favour of the idea.

They have the original quotes from the Fleetwood chairman, but I'm afraid he lost me at "I like Gillingham, just not on a Tuesday night".

Chinny f*cking reckon.

If this season is played out later in the year then splitting each league in half and playing a half a season could help get everything back on track. First place in each league goes up and 2nd and 3rd in the play-offs.

Weren't Lowestoft in the Conference North once due to the large amount of teams more southern than them?

We will proably end up as the southernest League 1 North team lol

Agreed. Plus it's very harsh on the fans of clubs particularly like Ipswich who are spread all over the country, due in no small part to the club playing all over the country for 60+ years.

It'll be just another reason to get out of L1 as soon as possible.

So, with nothing better to do of a lunch hour, I've worked out the split based on the start of this season (i.e. including Bury).

It seems very evenly split, with between 11 and 13 teams from each division making up L1N and L1S (current position out of the 48 in brackets). Likewise, the relative strength of each division is broadly similar:

North:

Rotherham (2)
Fleetwood (5)
Sunderland (7)
Doncaster (9)
Burton (12)
Blackpool (13)
Lincoln (15)
Shrewsbury (16)
Accrington (17)
Rochdale (19)
Tranmere (21)
Bolton (23)
Bury (24*)
Crewe (25)
Port Vale (32)
Bradford (33)
Salford (34)
Grimsby (37)
Carlisle (42)
Oldham (43)
Scunthorpe (44)
Mansfield (45)
Macclesfield (46)
Morecambe (47)

(Average position - 25.46)

South:

Coventry (1)
Oxford (3)
Portsmouth (4)
Peterborough (6)
Wycombe (8)
Ipswich (10)
Gillingham (11)
Bristol Rovers (14)
MK Dons (18)
Wimbledon (20)
Southend (22)
Swindon (26)
Plymouth (27)
Exeter (28)
Cheltenham (29)
Colchester (30)
Northampton (31)
Forest Green (35)
Crawley (36)
Walsall (38)
Newport (39)
Cambridge (40)
Leyton Orient (41)
Stevenage (48)

(Average position - 23.54)

Additionally, presumably there'd have to be two teams from each promoted to the Champ each season (with four coming down)?

Or would there be playoffs between N and S for the third spot?

Either way, much lower chance of promotion overall.

We all hoped that when Marcus Evans arrived it would see the club regain former glories. Hadn’t expected that it would be in Division Three (South) though....

So you would need to finish top 3 to get a chance of promotion?

Top goes straight up, then the two seconds and thirds play-off, final at Wembley.

In theory, assuming both leagues are of the same quality, the strength of the league will have diluted by half, so finishing 3rd in a regional league instead of 6th in a national one should be the same achievement.

But there is certainly less for ex-L2 clubs to play for. It'll be much harder for those at the top of L2 to challenge at a top of a regional league (they would in theory finish midtable).

It's clearly more preferable as an option for Northern clubs, who are far more bunched together, than for Southern clubs.

Very true. The relative 'narrowness' of England above The Wash certainly makes for a closer geographical spread of clubs.

Although the vertical distribution goes the other way.

Geographically this looks marginal. Apart from the outliers of Exeter and Plymouth, the South is mainly clustered around the M25. Apart from the outliers of Sunderland and Carlisle, the North is mainly clustered along the M62.

Not sure there's much in it, really.

This is only really likely to happen if there is a major change in the way football is financed & organised in England, probably involving cutting off all but the top 2 tiers from financial support. No other country has this vast pyramid of full time professional clubs, most of whom lose money every year & are dependent on the support of their owners.
Regionalisation would make sense for costs & for most fans, but the buffoons at the FA stopped dividing the first 2 rounds of the FA Cup between "north" & "south" some years ago.
