Dark Web Help 08:48 - Apr 24 with 1173 viewsKTBlue

Hi, I'm currently writing a novel, and could do with a bit of advice re the dark web (the old chestnut research...). If anyone here can help with a few questions, I'd be very grateful, and if they want, they'll get a credit and mention in the aknowledgements. Feel free to DM me, or reply to this.

What I could do with is:
Can you sum it up in a couple of sentences, that someone would use to describe it to a group of people who know very little about it?
How would people access it on their computers, do they need any special browsers or interfaces?
Am I right in thinking that you can’t search it, you have to be given an address, for example in a forum on there, and then you use that address to go to that site.

Cheers

"Can you sum it up in a couple of sentences, that someone would use to describe it to a group of people who know very little about it?"

So there are two concepts that people can mean when talking about the Dark Web. One is the actual Dark Web, and the other one is the Deep Web.

The Deep Web is on the "public" internet and is accessible but it is not indexed by search engines (e.g. you wouldn't be able to find it on Google). Most of the internet is actually comprised of this, only a fraction of it is indexed by search engines.

The Dark Web is somewhat related but you cannot access it through normal browsers like Chrome or Firefox. So yes, you usually need a special browser the most common being the TOR Browser.

https://www.torproject.org/

Using this you can navigate what are called "onion" links. For example, Facebook has one which is https://www.facebookcorewwwi.onion/.

If you try accessing this through your normal browser it won't work.

So if you were trying to describe it to an alien, it's essentially a less public version of the internet that has to be accessed in a slightly more secure way.

You can actually search the network, there are a few dedicated search engines for doing so but obviously some of the... sketchier places are going to be invite only and will not be indexed. But the same could be said of the deep web.
