Started thinking about testimonials attended and then randomly made a list of ones that I went to. Any others that people remember/went to? I've got a feeling I may well have forgotten one, or maybe two as well.
Alan Hunter v Celtic George Burley v Aberdeen Ron Gray v England XI Paul Cooper v Norwich West Ham (for Phil Parkes) at Upton Park Frank Yallop v West Ham John Wark v Arsenal (I always wondered why we didn't get Liverpool down for that) Simon Milton v (was it Blackburn?)
I reckon I got to Yallop's and Milton's as well as the two I mention above but can't recall them quite so well.
I also have a feeling I have a copy of the Robson programme. Interesting to see its value but (assuming I have got a copy) I wouldn't part with it. Need to go through them some time.
I doubt if my copy of the Robson programme is worth much unless my writing the team changes on it adds to its value.

To be honest, I think ITFC made it pretty clear that Butcher would have to go if we went down.
He was still playing for England and captained them after he left us didn't he? Am I imagining him being captain at Rangers too? I think he said he would love to stay and play for us but it was never going to happen. I seem to recall him also saying he preferred Scotland because he wouldn't have to play against us.

Why against Dynamo Moscow? Seems a tad random.
No idea, to be honest. I think they were going to be over here at the time and he was offered them. If I remember rightly he told me they cost £7,000. He and John Cobbold took a crate of whisky to them when they were staying in the Post House. Lev Yashin was their president and was among the travelling party.

He was heading to Mexico the World Cup as England so he couldn't be seen to be in the Second Division, but the bigger issue was we needed the money. The club was struggling still from the build of the Pioneer Stand which saw a lot of the UEFA Cup squad dismantled.
In my mind, it was more US having to sell rather than Butch wanting to go. Yes, he went to captain Rangers, if memory serves me right.

I think the Wark game I can recall was for Wilnis' testimonial in 2009. Thijssen also played. That wouldn't have been when I saw Woods play. I am sure he was playing as sweeper for someone likes Kings Lynn or something when he did turn out.
If my memory serves me right, I thought John Wark wanted Rangers then Liverpool for his testimonial but the local plod objected on the grounds of security ie large numbers of travelling fans, hence the reason he ended up with the gooners.

Mick Lambert a few days after cup final 78 wasn't it? Robson v England XI - if memory correct there a half time penalty shoot out in which Ron Atkinson was particularly impressive. Hunter v Celtic - can't believe this will be bettered for crowd, travelling support, game Etc Beattie v a team from Moscow John Wark v Arsenal and Ian Wright getting a standing ovation when he was substituted, and Bobby Petra mugged off Bergkamp.

In this BBC feature on Yashin in which his widow says she cannot remember how an Ipswich Town pennant cane to be on his wall, perhaps the Beat's testimonial is the answer?

See, there's another one that I reckon I went to as by the time Mich earned a testimonial, I was going home and away every week. Can't remember it or indeed who it was against though.
Yep, i remember that one. It was an Ipswich first team 11 vs our UEFA cup winners wasn't it?
I recall seeing Alan Brazil and whilst portly, he was still a cut above the rest of our team!

One of my saddest sights in football was seeing Alan Brazil playing against us at PR for Coventry and him being outpaced by Terry Butcher after a 20 yard head start.

Liverpool likely to bring more fans to Ipswich for a testimonial/friendly game than Arsenal? Surely not. I can see why they might have objected to Rangers, though. I haven't been to a testimonial for years as I think they're an anachronism in the days of highly paid footballers, although it's a personal decision of anyone to attend one. At least the tax free amount has now been limited to £100,000; Ryan Giggs pocketed £2m tax free from his.
