German doctors protest at PPE shortages 23:26 - Apr 27 with 1230 viewsTommyparker

German doctors have repeatedly appealed for more PPE since the arrival of the virus in Germany in late January.
German firms that make PPE have upped their production but have been unable to meet demand. Medical practices, clinics and care homes have made frequent requests for filter masks, goggles, gloves and aprons and say their needs have barely been met.
A recent study by an association of German health found that doctors were lacking more than 100 million single-use masks, 50 million filter masks, more than 60 million single-use aprons, and a similar number of disposable gloves.

Anyone would think there is a global shortage of PPE.

All men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.

So, it's a good job that the wholesalers here aren't shipping them overseas whilst the government here does nothing to prevent it and continues to try and do it on the cheap then?

The bitter irony here is, it's probably kit that's been approved by PHE.

Last week, Germany was optimistic it was on the path out of lockdown.
But on Tuesday, officalls warned the infection rate was increasing - and was now at 1 again. Last week, the rate had dropped to 0.7 , meaning ten infected would pass the virus to only seven people. In order to beat the pandemic the infection rate has to be below 1.

Their is a school of thought that he earlier you lockdown the greater the chance of a more deadly second wave.

There's no evidence to support that yet.

If the prevalence of the disease across the population in the UK, for example, was 5%, but in Germany it's only 2%, then the effect of our later lockdown (relative to spread) on the magnitude of further waves would be effectively zero.

But, if the prevalence of the disease were 50% compared to 20%, then your hypothesis would be correct, assuming that there is some immunity conferred by infection in asymptomatic cases, which is by no means certain.

In general, the limited studies so far are suggesting the first scenario more likely - the reason we took the approach we did in delaying lockdown was because we assumed the second more likely.

In practise, most countries now accept that the first situation is the case and they need to aggressively suppress infection wherever possible, and those countries that locked down early will be in a much better position to do this because there will be a much lower rate of community infection as they leave lockdown (see New Zealand, Czech Republic etc).
