The 'bit crap but you liked them anyway' XI thread on 13:05 - Apr 29 by Hullblue | Weirdly enough I was thinking the same thing about Danny Haynes last night. His finishing was excellent at times - one at home against Norwich where he opened his body out and bent it in the corner stands out. And didn’t he score a hat-trick away at Hull (or maybe Coventry) once? He looked unplayable. I can’t remember why it didn’t work out for him, but if anyone can shed any light I’d be interested. |
Haynes was a brilliant 'instinctive' player but the second he had to do any kind of thinking he went to pieces. He'd bury the bullet crosses that required pure reaction but hopelessly spoon his one-on-ones. [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 13:25]

The 'bit crap but you liked them anyway' XI thread on 12:55 - Apr 29 by Mach_foreignBlue | Ruined Pablo and Bowditch? Dear me what a tripe ! Bowditch had had an umpteen of chances to prove himself and he failed. Simple. We had had Westlake and Richards who both would thrive under Royle but their careers were ruined by Royle's successor. |
People complain about Mick being a dinosaur- but whereas Mick is Jurassic Joe Royal was Triassic. No clue whatsoever.

The 'bit crap but you liked them anyway' XI thread on 13:04 - Apr 29 by BlueBadger | Royle should have gotten us promoted with the side he inherited. It was fun...but a bit rubbish at heart. |
Did very well with that squad full of 'Premiership' primadonnas. If that squad was that good why didn't they perform under Burley following relegation? Why that squad was embarrassed by Grimsby, that 0-3 defeat and ended up near bottom 3? And again Royle lost Ambrose and Hreidarsson along the way. Things could have been different if we had kept them. [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 13:09]

I've not really got an 11, but would have picked O'Callaghan. All went to pieces for him after getting sent off at Watford, but had shown some decent potential before then. Trotter got a bit of stick at times, but I liked him too. Strangely I quite liked Pim as well, even though he makes many people's worse XI. There was something eqully inspiring and terrifying about his bombing on, abandoning all defensive duties and trying to unleash a rocket. ALB at the back for me. If ever the fans carried a player through a performance it was when he made his debut at Cardiff. I've never known people so desperate for a player to do well despite looking completely out of his comfort zone.

The crazy thing about Harbey is, in the first half of his opening season, he won a fair percentage of the Fisons MOTM awards.

The 'bit crap but you liked them anyway' XI thread on 13:06 - Apr 29 by Mach_foreignBlue | Sorted Burleys mess and still finished just outside the top 6. If only we could have kept Ambrose and Hreidarsson but for the administration. |
Sorting out the 'mess' Burley left wasn't really the toughest job, given that he didn't leave a mess behind him. I suspect that given a bit of time that season he'd have probably pulled us round quite nicely. Historically we tended to start slow under him and pick up early autumn to the point of being nigh unstoppable(unless we met a Bolton or a Birmingham) [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 13:26]

I'll take your word on that. (As in am not disputing it) Never seen a worse crosser of a ball in my life, utterly hopeless from memory!

That’s the sort of thing that can be coached though, surely? Seems an unusual reason to give up on a young player with his attributes. Looking at his record he did OK everywhere he went until Notts County. 9 in 33 for Charlton just before that isn’t bad at all, especially considering he played out wide a lot.

Indeed. A pound shop Theo Walcott. Still always liked it when he came on as sub when we were winning as he could exploit the extra space, especially on the break. A far better option when trying to keep a lead than bringing on an extra defender or holding midfield player.

doesn't meet the 'but you liked them' criteria for me. The winker used his height to bully his way past me for a pint in the centre spot once. Nver forgave him.

Oh god yeah. Dreadful really. I used to go down to PR and watch them train and he was often beyond belief then. I think David Hill, who was signed as a central midfielder, actually replaced him at left-back the following season. But yeah, my early memories of Harbey at the club was being presented with previous match awards by the tunnel before kick off. Scored one or two decent goals too.

And some. His crossing was fcking hopeless!! Can't remember his defensive abilities tbf which must have been at least half decent, cos he sure as hell wasn't in the team for his crossing.

I recall big shouts of 'concentrate' from the crowd whenever he got the ball, because it was like he forgot where he was and what he was doing there and so the ball could go anywhere, but never where you would expect it to go.

I maintain that ALB was a better goalkeeper than Dean Gerken who absolutely thieved a living here. Only Jon Douglas comes close for piss taking in recent years. Neither made my team as I had quite the opposite of fondness for them as players.
