'He confirms there were 122,347 tests across the UK in the 24 hours up to 09:00 BST (08:00 GMT) on 1 May. However, this figure includes tests which have been posted to recipients, but not yet carried out.'

So they chucked thousands of tests in the post this morning is what actually happened. Surely 'carrying out a test' should involve you know, carrying out a test.

Setting an arbitrary target for something then fiddling the figures so it looks like it's been achieved in order to make the government look good is the sort of thing that some would call political corruption if it happened in some less developed country in the Southern Hemisphere, or even a large one in this continent that lies eastwards.

It's not really much different from China under-reporting infections/deaths, arguably an even more blatant case of political grandstanding.

This is what all the 'blitz spirit', 'wartime effort' bluster was about - shield themselves with a bubble of patriotism so any criticism can be spun as talking the country down and not being all in it together.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

And counting tests ordered online but not returned yet also helps...

Then lying about not having changed the basis of calculation? Well, that's standard for this lot.

Their lie was exposed a few hours before the big announcement.

50,000 of that number (per day) are tests sent out and not yet returned.

The 739 deaths more concerns me, not some Tory cheerleading of a fake number

Surely if they have hit the target then that is good?

Or were we all secretly hoping they wouldn't so it can be as a big stick.

Peston and all his cronies must be gutted.

All men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.

You have missed the point again.

Read the posts about fiddling the figures and imagine if it had been done by a labour government.

I’d be furious with them as I am with this lot

You ignore the facts in favour of taking misguided digs at posters who want facts.

Then you have the cheek to cry that A.N.Other poster 'ruins' the board with his posting.

Put aside the nonsense and look at the reasonable points being made.

Thousands of testing kits were shoved in the post yesterday to bring up the figures.

That's really simple to take on board without the sarcastic BS.

Given where they were a month ago, I never thought they’d get anywhere near the 100k target. Not a snowballs chance in hell. By whatever measures you choose to use, whether that is a phenomenal effort by an awful lot of people in the public and private sectors. I think they deserve a lot of credit.

Amid the tragedy of this pandemic, there have been some amazing things done in this country from the wonderful people working in hospitals, care homes etc to scientists working on vaccines, to the military, contractors and others building Nightingale Hospitals all the way to the wonderful Capt Tom.

I think ramping up testing in numbers and sophistication is another achievement in the face of an appalling virus and will by crucial in managing it going forward The review of whether it’s a month too late, what went by the wayside to do this, cost etc etc is I believe for when this is over.

Indeed. Had the Government turned round on gone "we set a target based on expecting this that and the other that hasn't been possible (as Guthrum is trying to on their behalf) we should be able to applaud their honesty.

Instead, it is twisting of "facts" to suit. It continues to bring more doubt on what they say. Their supporters will go they did it, well done Boris, let's have a clap Matt Hancock day too. Their opponents will go "you lied". Unfortunately so many people are so entrenched in their view they will not be able to see beyond their own view.

What proportion of the 122,347 are those that have been sent out but not yet carried out.

You said 'thousands', but how many thousand, and where did you get that number from? It's all pretty meaningless without that piece of information.

This too.

If they had said we expected 25000 antibody tests, but they aren’t up to scratch so the target is 75000 and they hit it day after day without fiddling that’s ok.

Sending out 40000 tests yesterday and counting them as a returned test is wrong

They should be discounted from this number then IMO. It's 82,000.

I would have more of an appreciation if they just said it was an ambitious ask, but that we've worked hard to get to 82% of the target tested, with a further 40% out for home testing, potentially bringing the number to 122,000 for the day.

Absolutely, I genuinely wouldn’t have minded that at all.

Although, as Guthers says, the media would have had a field day which would have been unhelpful.

What’s really baffling is they backed themselves into this corner, they set the target themselves.

The first question in the next briefing ought to be how many of the 122000 tests carried out on 30 April were positive?

The answer will presumably deflect to which the comeback should be "it would be easy to reply if they had been carried out on Thursday. You cannot reply because only 82000 were actually carried out. How long will it be until we get 100000 test results in one day?"

But, as I said before, their supporters will accept the answer whatever answer is given. Their detractors won't whatever answer is given. There are far too few genuinely floating voters prepared to listen to rational argument and reason.

EDITED for wrong date!

Yes, but they want to be able to claim to have hit the target.

They are liars.

Johnson & Gove with Cummings the Brexit lie with Johnson sacked twice for lying in the past

Priti Patel was sacked for lying to Teresa May when she bumped into Benjamin Netanyahu on holiday, as you do.

Well, quite.

The Government were foolish to make an insufficiently-qualified promise in the first place, then more so to be so transparently contrived in fulfilling it.

Part of the problem is our politicians have had so many years of being trained to not answer questions, spin everything positively, even engage in outright doublethink, that they find it very hard to break the habit, even in a crisis*. In the ultra-competitive world of modern media, everyone wants the strongest, most clickbaity headline (the salacious and the negative grab more attention than praise and positivity). And we, the people, are stuck in the middle.

* Not just a UK problem. Do you remember in 2003 the Iraqi Information Minister saying to camera that Coalition forces were nowhere near Baghdad, while US tanks could be seen and heard the background?

The scandal here is not the dubious accounting of tests but that we are 50 days in and only just starting mass testing. This should be step #1 in a pandemic - especially one we saw coming in Jan/Feb.

One of them said that testing will continue to increase. That’s the key for me. Trends. If test numbers, types, availability continues to increase over the coming weeks that’ll be the key to tracking and isolating.

I take it all the countries to which everybody compares test numbers count them on the basis of tests carried out and results issued? I ask because on another aspect I notice that people are jumping on the shocking figures of those who have died and despite what the experts have said, have assumed other countries are counting numbers in exactly the same way - including Brazil, Spain, China and Russia.
