122,000 tests carried out yesterday on 18:55 - May 1 by ITFC_Forever | Supporting the government? Depends if you think this is acceptable or not..... The UK has had more Coronavirus deaths than the following countries COMBINED 🇧🇪Belgium 🇩🇪Germany 🇳🇱Netherlands 🇨ðŸ‡Switzerland 🇮🇪Ireland 🇵🇹Portugal 🇷🇴Romania 🇵🇱Poland 🇦🇹Austria 🇩🇰Denmark 🇺🇦Ukraine 🇫🇮Finland 🇳🇴Norway 🇬🇷Greece The UK has 67m people. The others around 270m people. |
It depends on the stats you use and what each country measures. Belgium, Spain, Italy of major European countries have a worse death per million figure than the UK. France is pretty similar. The US has a better per million figure than the UK, but nobody thinks Trump is doing a good job. Brazil’s figures are far better than us. Reading the Guardian article, I wouldn’t want their mad government here trying to deal with this for all the tea in China. The true figure for all countries will be those who lose their lives over and above the usual seasonal numbers and that stat wont be available for a long time. This Government are responsible for many problems and things that have gone wrong and I’m no fan of them, but care needs to be taken with interpreting stats.

122,000 tests carried out yesterday on 17:29 - May 1 by Guthrum | As I mentioned earlier, when they came up with this 100k target, it was anticipated there would be a range of tests in use (including one to detect infection products or antigens post-recovery), some of which would be quicker and easier to administer than the current up-the-nose-back-of-the-throat swab - none of which passed trials on reliability and are thus unavailable. But the 100k target has taken on a life of its own in the media, thus leading to them performing logistical gymnastics to surpass it on at least one day before the deadline. So it is perhaps a little unfair to be too harsh on the Government for this one. They'd have been shredded had they gone back on trying to achieve it, however reasonable under the changed circumstances. |
It was media pressure to come out with a figure and there are a couple of ways of looking at this - that's if people want to look at it like grown ups. There is no point in setting a target if it is too easy and by that nature if it is optimistic and isn't achieved it should not lead to a media witch hunt and calls to be fired. As you say the types of tests are changing and no one has a test which is as reliable as one would want - hence S Korea saying over 100 people have been reinfected when it is likely they haven't been - or never had it in the first case. Unreliable tests are more harmful than no tests and we had to dump 3 million earlier this month because they were indeed unreliable. I would guess that when the target was set it wasn't known that the test kits were rubbish - and if that were the case then rather than keep coming out with all the political speil I wish they would simply say "We will struggle to meet our goal as the tests we bought are a heap of sh1t and we cannot rely on their results so we've burned the bloody lot"

122,000 tests carried out yesterday on 17:38 - May 1 by Steve_M | The actual number of people tested was 73,191 according to this highly biased left-tard source. See: Breakdown of testing by 3 of the testing strategy ‘pillars’ https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public#hist The higher number comes from including tests sent out it seems. A government that resorts to spin first and foremost is not the ideal one for a public health emergency. Increasing testing is good but they've gotten themselves distracted by an arbitrary target, as has much of the media. |
That's still pretty impressive given where they were. More importantly numbers have been ramping up quickly this week. Logically, that should mean we can expect to continue to see the upward trend if they're now resolving supply issues. I'm not convinced fixating on the target is especially useful. I'd like them to be honest, but we know they're incapable. At the end of the day though the way they've improved this week, they'll be testing 100,000 people within a couple of days anyway. Scrutiny of their testing strategy would be a more useful use of the media's time rather than fixating on this target narrowly missed. In my completely unqualified opinion any way.

Exactly, maybe people will react more like adults if we were treated like adults. No one (who isn’t an idiot or in denial) believes these results, just tell us the truth. It’s a horrendous situation and mistakes will be made, just react like normal people would and forget the spin for once. Some people and media will take the opportunity to hammer them but most would see through this I reckon.

Belgium’s counting method is bonkers as it includes any possible Covid deaths which is why their number per million is so high. That number should be discounted as it’s not really comparable to the UK. France, Germany & Spain are the real comparisons. It hit Italy first, whereas the other 3 had a bit of a head start. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Spain don’t include Care Home deaths and France’s figures look all over the place on a trend basis. As far as possible Covid deaths, I think that happens in the UK too. It certainly was the case with somebody known to er indoors. The point is you have to compare like for like per million and that just isn’t possible at the moment.

Precisely high levels of testing would have been useful a month ago, not now, we had ample notice. Now we need ppe and of course the proper stuff isn’t available.

Am I not a real person then? Are my family not real people? Is unquestioningly and uncritically supporting the government, as they lead us inexorably towards the highest death toll in Europe, showing how much you care about real people? Is it fcuk. You’re supporting them because they wear blue ties, so don’t come on here and preach to me, who has been personally horrendously affected by this godawful virus, about how much you care about real people. Still no sense from you, just more pointless whining. Comment on the OP and the figures and how they were magically reached on the final day. You think that wasn't politics? FFS, seriously. How can a human being be so dumb? 100, 000 was the target set, and it was met for the one day on the final day. If you're sucked in by that then you're beyond help. It was a stupid target that no one believed, nor expected and would not have even considered had the big deal not been made of delivering it. Do you see? Then the push push to reach the number by any means and congratulations follow. Those are the sodding politics you're complaining about, right there, but bizarrely you're not looking despite it being bigger than a big thing staring you in the face. It's absurd. As others have said, it's almost meaningless and only serves as a distraction from the things that should have been in place ages ago. Luckily for them, there's plenty of people like you around.

1045 aircraft attacked Cologne 30/31 May 1942. They included 365 aircraft of OTU and 4 from Training Command. In other words everything they could scrape together. Leaving aside loss of life and damage, was it a propaganda exercise? Definitely. And for Arthur Harris at the time, a very successful one. The RAF followed it with a similar sized attack on Essen, but front line Bomber Command numbers then fell back to normal levels. The key with UK Coronavirus testing will be whether this was just a Government PR exercise and numbers in the next couple of week will determine that, as will what they are testing and how. If the numbers significantly fall, I’ll be the first to pile in, as I have with other posts on the HMGs efforts. Until then, aside from credit to a lot of people who’ve done a lot of hard work, let’s see. [Post edited 2 May 2020 12:02]

If, as reported they've just posted 50k test kits out then they haven't hit any target - the whole point of the target was so that we could be doing tests towards the level of countries like Germant |
I agree that setting target wasn't the best move. However, my point is that the left leaning posters here will hammer the Tories regardless hence by headline of BORING. Would Corbyn have done any better? I very much doubt it. He's out of his depth in the shallow end. This would have crushed him.
