If so I would like to share this site which is helping to keep me occupied during lockdown

https://www.oldmapsonline.org/en/Suffolk#bbox=0.33997473000000006,51.93211779000

and my current favourite map

https://maps.nls.uk/view/101168291

Which is giving me hours of pleasure exploring how things have changed and stayed the same over the last century and a quarter.

That makes 3 of us so far :)

Had a lodger 1998-2001 who back in those good ol days worked for Ordnance Survey mapping as a cartographer. Really envied him that job - guess it's all gone digital now.

I was a cartographic surveyor for the OS back in the mid to late eighties, I wasn't very good at it and I do hope that all my errors have been corrected by now. But just in case, take extra care when navigating round East London and take a mobile phone to call for help if you are walking round Epping Forest.

For my dad’s 80th birthday a few weeks ago, I wanted to get something a bit different and special for him, and I found online a place that I could get a personalised vintage map 1000 piece jigsaw of where he was born and grew up, with an OS map of Hadleigh from 1960, although there were earlier versions you could order. He loved it and keeps spotting things he remembered that are long gone.

When you're bored of that then have a look at this via the NLS site:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=51.51414&lon=-0.10434&layers=163&b=

More here and Mapping London is great in general too:

My current fascination, prompted by walking along the Regent's Canal a lot recently is the industrial heritage of what would now be called inter-modal points - the interchange between railway and canal for good bought into London - at Kings Cross and Camden.

I've lost days looking at old ordnance survey maps! :-)

When I retire I want to try and do one of those travelogues on old roads by cycling between say Ipswich and Cambridge or London using as many roads pre-1961 (when I was born) as I can!

I'd like to cycle to all the places that I've lived as well in that way, should keep me busy for a few months!

It's a shame that lockdown has stopped NLS from working because there are one or two maps I would like to buy from them, including that 100 year old Ipswich one.

Have only been to Epping Forest once many moons ago with a girl I knew from Uni. It was lovely until we came to a clearing which turned out to be the groundworks for the new London Orbital Road (M25). Yes - I am that old!

Many years ago when I was in my teens a group of us had been to see a town game in London and went back to my mates brothers in North London somewhere. Having had a few drinks I was persuaded you could roll up the white lines in road

so there I was about 11.30 at night trying to roll up the white lines in the middle of the A12 Romford area.

I got dragged away by my mates as the blue flashing light could be seen approaching

I’ve actually got the Nautical Chart for Felixstowe if you want me to put some photos up?

It’s a used chart. From one of the ships I was on. We are paperless these days and use electronic charts.

Really interesting. Can't see any evidence though of a football ground at Portman Road in the 1896 map. Wiki tells me there used to be a Cricket pitch but can't see that either.

In my Army days I had unlimited access to the Map Store....a large brick building on Barton Stacey B Camp. Floor to ceiling racks of boxes of maps from all over the World

A favourite was to get a full set of the 1:50 000 UK maps as a gift for friends/rellies. Some of the mapsheets from the north of Scotland were a bit dull.....just millions of contour lines and not a trace of road, dwelling or any other sign of human influence.
