Reuters report on deaths in carehomes in UK 11:49 - May 6 with 1242 viewsSteve_M

Sadly, I think this is going to be the real scandal of the UK's response. It's a large part of the reason for the high number of deaths and the decision to take people out of hospital without adequate testing perhaps the worst one made by UK authorities.

And that's before considering that social care is one of the most areas most affected by a decade of 'austerity'. Osborne's cynical ploy to shift the blame onto local councils for government-mandated cuts.

Unfortunately, I think that's spot on.

Even the care home deaths reported appear to be half of the care home excess death total. And that's before we even look at protecting the other care home residents and staff for another 6-9 months.

Given the clear data on age-related and health-related risk groups, this should have been a top priority from day one.

You might find this interesting Darth regarding the Coronavirus Act.

"UK: Elderly will be left to die as coronavirus plunges care sector into crisis"

"Instead of providing safe working conditions and care services for the elderly, disabled and vulnerable, Boris Johnson’s government has obliterated care standards as part of the Coronavirus Act. The bill, which withdraws key duties under the Care Act, was passed as emergency legislation with next to no debate."

Agree 100% with you on this. This is most definitely the biggest failing from the government during this crisis.

We can argue over when the lockdown should have started and you will get 10 different experts giving 10 different views, but without a shadow of doubt the elderly have been left most vulnerable by the government. It's as if they were an afterthought.

Regarding social care, T May put forward radical social reform measures in the 2017 general election and it cost her a massive poll lead and her majority.

And that was down to people voting against losing their inheritance which was completely selfish of the electorate.

It's a massive failing of multiple Governments that social reform has not been prioritised.

She did but unfortunately she had zero ability to sell the policy to the electorate, one of many things Nick Timothy might have considered.

Operation Cygnus was ignored by the Government and even Gove admitted to not reading it until a few weeks ago.

It gave the Government a 3 year warning on all this. Those that buried it should resign

Yes and then the introduction of the Coronavirus Act in late March which actually suspended most local authority social care obligations.

Charities and human rights experts warned back then about the risks to the elderly and other vulnerable people.

How many were left to die as a result of this Act?

It’s a very different cabinet to the one which would have been in place when the report was published but that is no excuse. Too much in-fighting has led to this - how can people care for the country when they’re too busy being concerned about their own ideaology?

I wonder if there's been anything else going on by way of a distraction and sucking resources out of government departments?

Too much Brexit at the time too.

Based on their cavalier attitude to the long-term risks and costs of leaving the EU, it's not surprising they didn't respond to Cygnus. Especially on top of years of underfunding public services and removing citizens' protections.

We shouldn't even be surprised by now. The Cygnus lessons were obviously going to be ignored or otherwise screwed up by the breed of politician and government we currently have.
