Middle of the War of the Spanish Succession. Too early for the South Sea Bubble (1720).

Not sure of anything specific, without looking it up.

Edit: Are you sure that wasn't specifically Scotland, which was in a shambles after the failure of the Darien Expedition?

The Act of Union was passed (coming into effect 1 May 1707), and Twinings Tea Shop opened on The Strand, and is still there today.

So it'll be one or other of those.

Nah - 1709 saw the first county cricket match and the discovery on a Pacific Island of Alexander Selkirk, whose story inspired Robinson Crusoe.

Ah, that's just the earliest economic data they have on record (at least, which has survived to the present day)*. So effectively they just mean the worst recession since records began.

* Tho isolated periods of Exchequer records do survive from before that.

The great frost...

Surprised you don’t remember it. You often allude to it by saying “it’s cold, but it’s not 1709 cold”.

Must be the Act of Union. Always brings trouble. Brexit will see us rule the waves again.

Yes, the markets obviously reacted to the disaster they knew was coming. Short selling and all that.

Hence why with Brexit on the horizon … oh!

No, the great frost was 1708,

You,re thinking of the great snow of 1706.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Having to bail out the Scots after their ridiculous Darien Scheme investments can't have helped.

(The Darien Scheme was an attempt to establish a Scottish colony in what is now Panama).
