They are also remembering their loved ones who had to go through 6 years of real sh1t, not 6 weeks of early drinking, binge TV watching lockdown. [Post edited 8 May 2020 9:26]

What are people celebrating today on 09:21 - May 8 with 1267 views | GlasgowBlue | The end of a horrific conflict. I’ll also take time to remember my late father and grandfather. My dad was born whilst my grandad was overseas fighting and never met him until he was four years old. It’s something I tell my youngest daughter about whose history project this term has been WW2. I wouldn’t normally get involved in the celebration side of WW2 but my kids haven’t seen their friends since lockdown, two have had their A Levels cancelled, so its another excuse to have a garden party. And they can let off some steam. Although there’s a high wall between us and outer neighbours they will also be having a garden party and I’m doing the music (Dads Army, Vera Lynn, Goodnight Sweetheart) so it’s a chance for some communal spirit during this awful time. What are people celebrating today on 10:07 - May 8 with 1206 views | NewcyBlue | You can’t have one without the other Blubbers. I’m not one for outward displays of celebration when it comes to this stuff. The last Merchant Ship to be sunk by a U boat was sunk at 2301hrs on 7th May 1945. The SS Avondale Park. Germany surrendered at 0241hrs that day. Over 20 hours after surrender was signed, merchant seamen still died. My Grandfather was in the Merch in WWII.

I think my great-grandfather was in the Merchant Navy during WW1 as it happens. We found a bunch of his papers from that time. I think one of my grandfathers was in Africa in WW2 and the other was in Ipswich working as a mechanic. Unfortunately don't have a lot of information on either of them.

Do you know the names of ships your great-grandfather served on? I may be able to help with finding a bit more out about his service for you.

What are people celebrating today on 10:28 - May 8 with 1162 views | Ewan_Oozami | Maternal grandad was a Military Policeman in the Middle East during WW2 - he was half a mile away when the King David Hotel was blown up by the Irgun in 1946. Paternal grandad was one of the first officers into Belsen in April 1945. I'd rather remember them, who fortunately survived, and the millions who didn't, rather than sing Vera Lynn songs to be honest.

I'd have to find the papers, I think my uncle probably knows more about him as he was looking into a whole host of that side of the family tree. The only thing I can even remember is the last name which isn't overly common. Thank you for the offer though, appreciate it.

My grandparents reaction is much the same. At least during the war they could go outside, see their loved ones, touch them etc. I guess it helped that you could generally see or hear the thing that was possibly going to kill you.
What are people celebrating today on 10:37 - May 8 with 1142 views | hampstead_blue | Not sure what to make of the OP here. I think others have given you plenty reason for celebration. End of war is one big thing. It's a nasty, nasty thing. Nobody really enjoys it and pretty much everyone involved loses something.
| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Very good... Started on the Bulldog apparently and that that one... Initially a Gunner, became Petty Officer- which eventually lead to a career in accounts connected with the wine trade...

Not sure that works or we couldn't have peace and victory without atrocities. Not something I wish to argue about I just don't really like the way it is being spun by some. I want to honour my grand fathers and the people that were lost and more than anything celebrate the fact we have been largely peaceful with our European neighbours since. It seems to stir 10 German bomber chant style celebrations amongst those that get weird over the Union flag

Indeed. Gerrie Halliwell isn’t bad either.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |
