82% of Canada deaths in care homes 20:03 - May 8 with 1286 viewsTommyparker

Over 82% of 4,167 people who died with Covid-19 in Canada have been elderly residents of long term care homes a report from Canada's National Institute on Aginng says.
The proportion is similar in other parts of the world, as the virus disproportionally affects the elderly and sick.
The US state of New Jersey plans to deploy National Guard troops to nursing homes over the weekend, after finding that residents make up half of the state's death toll.

We know the virus has a large proportional negative effect on the vulnerable. That's why they're vulnerable.

The concern needs to be focussed on how it's got to them.

Over 65% of Irish deaths due to Covid-19 are in the over 80 years age group.

Well in this country it seems to be because they took them out of hospital, thinking they would safer away from them. But we don’t seem to have tested them before they went into the care home!

I believe the ONS stats for England and Wales are very similar.

My figure is correct on todays numbers but the point is that it does disproportionately affect the elderly. Grouping the elderly in nursing homes was an accident waiting to happen. Dealgan House Nursing Home in Dundalk, Co Louth had 23 deaths in its resident population of 84 in April.

That's certainly the case in some situations, but it can't explain every home with this issue.

I am thinking of one in particular that is home to a relative of mine and [as far as I know] there's been no resident been reintroduced there, which means it's come through the doors via staff.

Neither scenario is acceptable of course. People move into those places to be looked after, not to be held captive for a disease to finish them off.

The virus was around long before lockdown, it's not really a surprise that it got into care homes.

Millions of people in the UK will have had it.

5 people have died in a home in the past 3 weeks.*

There were no deaths nor signs of the disease before that.

It hasn't sat there dormant for 2/3 months.

Lockdown has been 7 weeks.

So it could well have been in the home for 4 weeks before the first death. Or realistically only 1-2 weeks before the first person became symptomatic.

You're making things up.

No of course it hasn't been there for several weeks amongst a bunch of vulnerable people stuck into a space together without showing itself.

Don't be so desperate.

Sorry, you've offered nothing useful there in terms of a response.

Feck off and don't respond to a single post of mine.

You're doing the same routine.

You pick out a post and leap on it. You get a reasonable response but can't let it go.

You're not interested. It's the same every time - it's all about picking a row.

I've told you I don't like you, then you make comments like that even though I've told you a dozen times.

I get on just fine with pretty much everyone on here, then you appear looking for a fight.

Same pattern, every time.

Edit: and this is the funny bit. You always do this too. You accuse the other person of being angry, then wind yourself up, and then go back through the thread to down-vote their posts.

I merely offered an opinion, and as usual, you went on the offensive.

It's ok to disagree.

To be fair, you have used less aggressive language this time, which is refreshing.

Happy to agree to differ.
