William Hill report people are betting on table tennis and German horse racing whilst the football is off.

Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

I don't get why William Hill are doing a press release like that. Surely it just highlights to right-minded folk that they're doing all they can (in terms of providing markets) to accommodate problem gamblers at this time.

Dunno about any of yous, but before this lockdown hooha I'd noticed a steep increase in the number of Will Hills closing down. Think there were ~600 slated for closure in the UK in total. But on my daily rounds I could usually count six Will Hill shops that are no longer open.

It's just a shame our high streets have nothing to replace them with.

It is an eye opener. If people betting on Nicaraguan table tennis haven't worked out they unfortunately have developed a habit, they probably need the bookmaker to make the decision for them, and as a minimum need signposting towards help for gambling addiction.

Not going to happen though is it?

Football Index.
No, it's not a pyramid scheme.
Yes, there is money to be made.
Yes, it is good fun.
Happy to share my portfolio with anyone doubtful?
3 and a bit years I've been "playing" it, very entertaining and a great way to BET, especially if you have a decent bit of lower league knowledge.

Its actually good to hear someone call this what is is - gambling - rather than 'investing'.

It's fun, but don't build your retirement portfolio around it people.

So you're suggesting it's more along the lines of surreptitiously advertising to problem gamblers that they can get their fix by betting on Honduran shinty with Hill's?

I'm totally honest about what it is.

I've been fortunate in that i was playing it from very early on, so i guess most of my cap appreciation has been as a result of the whole platform growing. However, I do maintain that the vast majority of people on there are premier league focused, and so with a bit of knowlegde of leagues outside that, there's money to be made.

I've barely made a traditional bet since I've been on FI, a 3 year bet with the incentive of dividends and the option to sell for a cap gain appeals more. horses for courses though.

Surely playing the stockmarket is just another form of gambling?

Course it is. I invest in shares and anyone who says/thinks otherwise is being silly. Or kidding themselves.

But unlike say Casinos, the odds are not stacked against you.

And bookmakers take a margin for horse racing. So shares are a far better way of investing than say in horses.

Not all forms of gambling are created equally though!

Surely the art to being a good gambler (if there is one!) is only making the bets that you have an edge in? Gambling my 401K on a coin flip isn't the same as buying up a few Amazon shares (it is much less fun than a day at the track though!)

Gambling in the UK is out of control, the fact people are resorting to this shows you how hooked they are, everyone with a smart phone is just a few clicks away from loosing more money than they can afford to.

It doesn't help the way gambling has been through a gamification of sorts, that's why there are so many young people hooked from an early age. I've seen first hand the damage it can do to people's lives, it's awful.
Back two years or so ago when I worked with kids in care, we were continuously having to do referrals for kids as young as 14/15/16, some of whom were encouraged and enabled by family members to peruse this behaviour.

I think much like with alcohol a lot of people who have a problem probably don't realise it's a problem.

As with guns in the US, gambling his certainly the UK's blindspot. Our town and city centres look vastly different to any other European or North American town and city centres. They've been completely taken over and ruined by betting shops.

Spot on Sir. And surely if you betting on Nigaraguan table tennis then the sign is there.

I initially thought the same with the virtual grand national tbh, though reflected that maybe some escapism / desire for normality was there too. But am struggling to see any scenario other than these guys (betting on Belorussian footie) have a gambling habit.

We have deregulated and made it so easy/accessible and sadly many are now addicted. The report earlier said WH had maintained nearly half their revenues which indicated a significant number of their gamblers have addiction problems.

Very sad and I don't see it improving.

If they've studied the form and written a long winded blog about the Nigaraguan table tennis though it's okay and in no way shape or form a problem...

Did I catch wind that gambling using a credit card is now banned in the UK? If so, that's a great thing,

Just saw on Betfair that's it's only debit cards. A credit card I'd used on there now has a warning symbol thingy on it. Good stuff.
