What should the good consumer citizen do....? 09:04 - May 16 with 674 viewsBanksterDebtSlave

As a self employed couple whose earnings have not been impacted by the virus should we be applying for the 80% of average earnings grant so that we can do the dutiful thing.....namely pay a little more tax and buy some more stuff?

In the declaration, you do have to state that your business has been impacted by Covid-19, so theoretically they could come after you (e.g. if your earnings haven't gone down at all).

I have been able to continue doing at least some work, but have lost (at least temporarily, perhaps until next year) a couple of sizeable jobs which I was expecting to do this spring. My earnings are considerably down, less than half. So I have applied. Given it's only an 80% top-up and is subject to tax/NI, I doubt I will be making much, if any, "profit" on the deal.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Business is down about 25% at the moment and probably for the next couple of months, so applied yesterday.
Can see a few more customers falling by the wayside as well, so am going to put the grant towards covering that shortfall, not spending on non essentials.
To be fair, was a very easy process.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I hadn't looked in to the detail so was unaware of the declaration...all impacts have been non financial...I will be steering clear though.

Am I right in thinking you will have to claim the full 80% rather than just the 25% lost earnings?

There are winners and losers blah blah blah. I dont know anyone who has 'not been impacted' I know loads who have lost out hugely and a few who are raking it in.... it's a bit odd if a deliberately stalled economy and wrecked employment market havent impacted you just a tad?

This is a grant not free money off the money tree. As other have no doubt said its best not to apply if you don't have to as it will no doubt turn into a total ***storm in due course.

Yes, extremely easy. Also, got on there a lot quicker than I was expecting.

It comes as a single lump sum, calculated at their end (80% of three months' drawings, averaged from the last three tax returns). There is no facility for adjustment.
