If you are saying the current government advice is to wear masks outside, you are wrong. It isn't. Our police follow UK advice not American and/or Guardian articles.

.gov.uk tells you it's a UK govt site. If you can correct me on a Uk govt site will happily stand corrected.

Maybe not but this is from gov.uk -

"You are at higher risk of being directly exposed to respiratory droplets (released by talking or coughing) when you are within two metres of someone and have face-to-face contact with them."

But only if you inject it.

In Glasgow they'll inject themselves with anything, just to numb the pain of being in Glasgow.

Ordinarily neither would I. But I am struggling to see the need for face masks outdoors. The risks are far less than inside.

But that is an aside. Reads to me like the guy is trying to imply the police are ignoring official advice when they are doing nothing of the sort.

Face masks mmm it’s funny that the countries that have more or less beaten this ,2 for example South Korea and New Zealand , nearly everyone wore face masks

They offer about 5x the protection of not having one apparently. Sounds good to me.

Not now they have beaten this awful disease , however even though they weren’t mandatory in n z or South Korea 90 odd percent of people wore them , and their death tolls , miles better than the u k

Mainly because they either (a) locked down early, (b) ramped up testing and track and trace, or (c) did a bit of both. It wasn't face masks that led to them having a much lower death toll than us, it was competent, proactive government.

I think the death tolls are correct , anyway no point in arguing ,most other countries recommend the use of face masks in some countries it is mandatory , in the u k it is not , but by going by the fatality rates , uk compared to other countries I think the use of face masks speaks for itself

Yeah, our mortality rate really isn't about face masks.

Ok so what you are saying is , the use of face masks would not have reduced our mortality rate

Don’t get me wrong, NZ have absolutely nailed it so far, but they’ve not all been wearing face masks.

There has been more face mask wearing there than here , yeah testing and locking the borders had more impact , but wearing face masks does help

No, I'm saying there's no scientific evidence that recommending or enforcing the use of face masks would have drastically reduced our mortality rate. There are many reasons why we have one of the worst mortality rates, but there is no evidence that face masks amongst the general populace is key amongst those reasons. The main difference between us and the likes of South Korea, New Zealand and Germany, for example, isn't about how many people decided to wear face masks. It's about their proactive response and strategy in contrast to us.

To a degree yes , but face masks have to improve the possibility of spreading the virus , if you cough or sneeze 50% of those droplets will be caught by a face mask , that’s 50% that you are not spreading into the atmosphere that other people are breathing in , it’s got to become mandatory in easing the lockdown

My favourites are the couple in the second row who are desperately trying to fit their masks on.

Way to show the courage of your convictions there folks.

What's the science behind the view that face masks should be mandatory across the board? There probably is some, but there's also some that says it's impact would be negligible.
