I just checked and the next two highest attendances were 35109 at home to Liverpool in December 1976 and 35077 to see us beat them from up the road 2-0 in September 1975
edit-the record before that Leeds game was 34709 against Liverpool in the 4th round of the Cup in 1975, don't know if the gates were locked that day.
I don't think my feet touched the floor the whole game in Churchmans
I was in Churchmans - actually, to be more accurate, I was on the wall/grass at the front of Churchmans. I remember seeing broken crash barriers being passed down the North Stand end - or did I imagine that? It was obviously pre-Hillsborough so not that alarming at the time.

I too was in Churchmans that day having queued from around midday to get in. I remember there was a barrier that broke in the North Stand that day with a few injuries resulting, but certainly don’t recall seeing anything during the game though.

I was in Churchmans against Liverpool in 1975. I don't remember the crush being appalling. I do remember huge queues to get into the station after the game & suddenly a bunch of Liverpool fans getting excited as a result of totally spurious rumour that Town's goal had been "cancelled" because we had fielded an ineligible player or some other nonsense.
Yep I was in the North stand, fairly near the barrier that buckled/bent. I think it was about at that point I thought 'Jeez it's a bit full in here' You had no control at all... you just went wherever the surge/movement of the crowd took you.
The one and only game we got locked out , arrived just after 3 , tried to watch on top of GRE car park .... couldn’t get in there either .
This was the only Town game from which I've been locked out and while it was disappointing at the time, after we lost I was actually pleased to have missed it.

Strange that the gates were locked for that one because there were more than 1,000 more in the ground when we played Spurs the previous month and also a handful more for the cup replay with Forest.

Yes, I walked all the way around the ground & nothing open, no touts left with stand tickets etc. There was also an official attendance of over 32,000 when we were at home to Liverpool.

Yes, the 32274 for the Liverpool game was the highest of the lot that season-I only saw the Spurs attendance and the Forest one in comparison with the Arsenal one in TMWMTT so I did not look back far enough.
If Priti Patel had been announcing the crowd over the PA system that day , our record attendance would be three hundred and eighty one thousand exactly..

Arsenal fans stormed the turnstiles, police ordered closing of gates I believe
