They wouldn't even need to go into much detail about exactly why he might have been visiting a major drugs company during a medical crisis - it's a logical thing to do. There is no reason for the government to keep deals on producing a vaccine secret (they didn't when it came to ventilators). I doubt Cummings was striking deals between GSK and a French company on his own initiative. He doesn't even strike me as ideal lead negotiator material. Especially as it would mean dealing with the EU. Nothing I have read about the man suggests he is overly corporatist (i.e. promoting big business over all else). [Post edited 25 May 2020 8:18]

Covered by the article. The smaller the location for something clandestine, less loose lips. Maybe Cummings has been on the receiving end of R&D ...

The main car park at Barnard Castle is outside the secure complex, whereas at other GSK sites I have visited the car parks are past security gates. He could have gained access to other sites without walking in a public area. Of course that does not mean he would not have been given special access to the site by car, Barnard Castle is far less secure than other GSK sites. I have a badge to access Barnard Castle site un-escorted, but GSK would not allow me un-escorted access to Stevenage and Ware, also there are several parts of both those sites that my regular escort had no access to either and he had to hand me over to someone else to get into those areas. Cummings could get into Stevenage and Ware sites virtually un-seen in areas where very few people would have access to and much closer to London as it is adjacent to the A1. The main production at BC is antibiotics and liquid inhalations medication.

I think the most likely scenario is that Cummings was massively selfish again and decided to celebrate his wife's birthday which happens to be the 12th April. SB
