Tree splits in two at the ground. One half is rotted a few feet up and going to break at some point. The wind this afternoon has made me acutely aware of the problem! Ideally chopped up yes. [Post edited 31 May 2020 17:54]

Can you get a rope around it and at least secure it facing away from the house/any buildings? Or is it too big for all that?

Not too big for that, but not sure I have any rope!

That could be an obstacle then. You're going to have to get the scaffold tower out of the shed in that case. Hard hat, chainsaw... Or an axe. I've seen people do that on TV. You just cut a little notch into the wood facing the way you want it to fall. Or is it the other side? Anyway, it looks really easy.

3 ways it can fall... Into my greenhouse. Onto my fence. Into my neighbour's garden. All are somewhat sub optimal! There aren't many garden jobs that I wont have a go at, but this feels like one to leave to an expert.

I'd have been mortified if you'd actually considered that advice. It may be worth getting hold of some rope for now though. But then, the way you describe it there's not anywhere you could guide it towards anyway. Yellow Pages it is, by the sound of it.

Take your fence panel out and chop it so it falls into your neighbours garden. Put your fence panel back in. Possession is 9/10ths of the law. Their problem innit.

From your description the tree sounds quite compromised. It is extremely dangerous to cut a tree that is partially rotten. Even trained professionals have difficulties because of the unpredictability of when and where the wood will break. Like yourself I would have a go at trimming it in stages if it were a healthy tree. DEFINITELY get a professional to do this one. It will be expensive but life is precious and to attempt to do this yourself would be foolhardy. Ladders and trees are not a good mix. VIDEO VIDEO
