And was such an underrated player. I remember this night well as I was there. These were supposedly really good along with Widzew Lodz who we destroyed on our way to the final .

For the younger fans...this is why Eric Gates was so important to us on 21:20 - Jun 11 with 1287 views
I remember that game, but the Widzew one much better. I was a 14 year old and used to go with a close friend of my Dad's and his son, that night his future son in law came along expecting to see us get smashed, he was a Man Utd fan and and I believe Widzew had knocked them out in an earlier round.
Edit for speeeeling 5-0 wasn't it?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Opposition fans must have absolutely hated Gates.

Interesting that for such an important player that he struggled so much to get into the team.... granted he was destined perhaps to replace Clive Woods, himself a vital player, and who himself had been more or less ignored by Robson for years - but Gatesy had to run home twice and even enlisted his rather fearsome big brother Bill to talk some sense into Robson.

Fearsome big brother Bill? I heard he was a bit (Micro) soft.
