English wine 21:08 - Jun 19 with 4093 views | sparks | Still crap isn't it? I am familiar with the concept that south east england is at a similar latitude to champagne and chablis, and that it is on the same geological layer with similar chalky soils etc. I am familiar with the frequently asserted opinion that English wine has come on hugely and is underrated. Also, the received wisdom that you pay for the champagne name, when the cheap stuff really isnt even as good as good english stuff. But every time I shell out reasonable cash on an English fizz (and I have spent anywhere between £15 and £35) I have been disappointed. An £18 bottle of Nicholas Fuillate champers is invariably better.

English wine on 21:23 - Jun 19 with 2693 views | StokieBlue | I am going to have to disagree on this one. I find English sparkling excellent and it frequently wins the international blind tasting against the French (Hungarian sparkling is also superb if you like fizz, I enjoyed some earlier). The latitude isn't so much of a factor as climate change which has shifted the climate to similar to what Champagne was like 200-300 year ago I believe. Hard to go wrong with a Ridgeview, Nyetimber or something from Chapel Down. Other English wine is also rather good as like as you like it minerally and dry. Both Baccus and Flint Dry from Chapel down are well worth a look. You are certainly right that it's not cheap though due to the smaller quantities produced, it's not a value-for-money purchase when set against French production. It really shouldn't be seen as a cheaper alternative. SB

English wine on 21:28 - Jun 19 with 2665 views | catch74 | We’re near Greyfriar’s Vineyard, I’ve taken the staff there for training, very informative. The sparkling wine they make uses the same process as Champagne - second fermentation in the bottle, yeast frozen and disgorged , bottle aged for a minimum of 18 months (- Prosecco in a VAT and ready to go.) The price, therefore is hard to keep low. I really enjoyed their Blanc de Blanc but not keen on any of their still wines. Best English sparkling I’ve had is Nyetimber, but you pay for their name a bit now. [Post edited 19 Jun 2020 21:34]

That's good enough for me. Stokie is the anti-J2 when it comes to consumption.

I have had Nyetimber. It was okay. But for me, a disappointment for the price and in comparison to cheaper champagnes.

If you see Greyfriars, give it a go, not saying it will change your opinion but it’s another good English vineyard. Have you tried blind tastings!?

Have to drink something if you are a green environmental low carbon footprint /insert beverage here/ socialist. English sparkling wine may well be the best bet for U.K. southerners......if you have run out of Gin and also, but not necessarily, tonic.

I can certainly vouch for Greyfiars too, the Pinot Gris is really rather good. Even better it’s less than 3 miles from my house.
English wine on 22:28 - Jun 19 with 2509 views | Pinewoodblue | Dedham Vale Vinyard, Boxted is worth a visit, once they are open again for tours and tastings. Cost around £30 a head but you get a tour, generous tastings of 4-5 wines plus a good lunch, takes around three hours from start to finish. You can visit their shop before you leave.

I can also vouch for Camel Valley, I’ve made stupidly long trips just for an excuse to go there (was on holiday in Barnstaple and made the drive just for the sake of getting a couple of bottles). Biggest issue for English wine is the cost, prices put them in fine wine bracket so drinking English wine is only for special occasions when I can afford it.

Camel Valley is less than a mile from the house my Mum grew up in and my Aunt still lives in to this day..... she’s 86, and has lived in that house for 90% of her life. We used to go on holiday there every year in the 70s and 80s.

Pretty much everything other than wine. I've tried so many times to try and force myself to like it. I just can't, red in particular just tastes like vinegar.

Quite. The minced beef Finders Crispy Pancakes are an affront to the taste buds but the ham and cheese are devine.
