Online coffee recommendations 12:35 - Jun 23 with 1949 views | hampstead_blue | I'm bored with the same old from the supermarkets and am looking to branch out. We used to get a few kilos shipped over from Thailand, friend in situ, but they trebled their prices so that made it uneconomical. I've looked at a few and even with a veterans discount, often 20%, it's still £6 per 250g. Is that the going rate or am I missing something? Recommendations welcome. Peace and love.

You can spend an awful lot more than that if you are so inclined. Unless you want American coffee then you only need one bean for 2 filter pots and it's very economical (not true everywhere of course). SB [Post edited 23 Jun 2020 12:51]

I've got a proper DeLonghi espresso machine now I'm an upwardly mobile middle class type. Was worth the investment and I find that the evil Amazon do some good deals on beans if you're happy to gamble. Also had a V60 for years and am a big fan. They charge stupid money in hipster coffee shops and there are blogs detailing all these weird coffee voodoo ways that you must make a brew using it. But it's nonsense. Good grinder, decent filter paper and just let it drip drain through. You get a very different coffee more akin to a tea but it's lovely.

I've recently been playing with an Aeropress that I was given for my birthday. I like it. Excellent coffee - smooth with lower acidity. Makes a decent espresso imitation but I've been enjoying it with added extra hot water. It's also very economical as it uses very little coffee, it's quick, very little cleanup required and if you're the outdoorsy type it's easy to just sling in your bag for camping etc. Think it's about $30 over here so should be similar back home. Only downside is that it makes enough for only one person at a time. [Post edited 23 Jun 2020 13:15]

Good God yes. I now buy from a local roaster who roasts light, but if you buy supermarket beans they're like tiny nubs of charcoal roasted to within an inch of their lives. Terrible stuff, but the locals seem to like it that way.

I've been using the Aeropress this week (Fathers Day pressie). The coffee it makes for the price of the kit (about £30 quid, as you say) is exceptional. None of the bitterness and horrible after taste, incredibly smooth and clean taste. Proper, proper coffee. I'm currently using a Starbucks dark roast Espresso, which is surprisingly nice. I have a selection 'starter pack' from Grind House. 3 x 110g bags of their best selling beans. Think it was £8.50 for them. I'll work through them once the Starbucks is gone. Oh, and I'm using a hand grinder, which is pleasantly soothing to use!

We've been a mocha family for years. A mocha is full-on. I'm tempted by a V60 just for the change of flavour in how it brews. https://www.pactcoffee.com/brewing-equipment/hario-v60-metal-drip-decanter

An Aeropress is brilliant - quick, easy and the coffee really does taste better. Otherwise I use a cafetiere.

I bought one of these a month or so back, great machine although the descaling is a bit of a pain.
