Aphids aphids aphids! 08:39 - Jun 24 with 1346 views | Dubtractor | Any other twtd gardeners being swamped by the various green/black/white fly hoards this year? Don't recall seeing them in these numbers in recent years. Assume it is because of the mostly very dry and warm period we've had since March?

Aphids aphids aphids! on 09:15 - Jun 24 with 1254 views | north_stand77 | Yes, loads of black fly on broad beans cauliflowers and redcurrants. The ants are doing their best to scoff them all, but are definitely losing the battle. There were masses of green fly on the roses too but about 3 weeks ago I sprayed them with a weak solution of water and washing up liquid which seems to have helped things a bit.

We do also have a thriving ladybird community in the garden, which is probably helping a fair bit!

Aphids aphids aphids! on 10:10 - Jun 24 with 1204 views | hampstead_blue | white fly on the coriander and basil. How on earth did they get into the kitchen? Clever little things. Have not grown beans and peas this year. Peppers and tomatillos looking really healthy. Will have first padron harvest very soon. Edit; Don't wasps eat the aphids? I know they rob spiders webs. | Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Wasps will eat aphids. A little washing up liquid mixed with water sprayed on the little blighters can be fairly effective too.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

You don't see wasps like you used to, do you ? Where did they all go ? Were they killed by grey squirrels ?

Trouble is there is the ants won't be eating them. It's them there ants who have put them there. They're using your crop to farm the blackfly and harvest the goo they produce. Clever little sods.

Wasps, hoverflies, earwigs. It's taken me this long into life to understand that earwigs aren't the enemy. I do use the odd spray here and there, as you describe and sometimes other organic sprays, but even those can't be healthy for the good insects can they? It is a conundrum at times.
