Noticed this when it came out and was intrigued but do not think it would be a 'must see'. It is on the iPlayer now:

Peak Bennett, even has him as a split personality arguing with himself about how far he falls short of Proust, I reckon Lambert ought to try that in one of the press conferences...

And if there is no poo thread this Friday then a watch of this film will more than compensate for that.

[Edit} SPOILER ALERT for first post replying to this...

I watched this back in 2016, quite a sad film I thought where the lady thought she was hiding from the police, whereas in reality I understood it be an accident where the cyclist was killed.

Great film. Jennings got Bennett spot on.

I bet Bennett gives a mention to battenberg somewhere in the proceedings.

I cannot recall even a cup of tea in the film, let alone any cake.

But there is a scene where Alan Bennett asks Miss Shepherd if she would like a cup of coffee and she storms 'Certainly not!'; and then she turns away before turning back and saying 'I will have half a cup'.

Fantastic film, saw it when it was screened t'other night (Sat?) on terrestial TV, couldn't tear my eyes away, ended up teary ...

Absolutely outstanding acting by Dame Maggie Smith - best performance of hers that I've seen. Also particularly enjoyed Roger Allam as one of the snooty neighbours!

Hard to sort out what was fact and what added in would be my only criticism - would have liked to know if "the lady" actually had performed in the starring role mentioned; and whether Lady Vaughan-Williams really was a neighbour, (instead of having to look those things up afterwards).

The scene at the end with her playing was ... aw, starting to fill up again! I did wonder if that would have caught me in the same way if I'd seen it as a younger person - maybe you have to see it from the perspective of advanced years to appreciate it fully?

I haven't seen 'The Lady in the Van' yet but can I recommend an earlier film of Alan Bennett's...The History Boys. Not to be watched with small children (because of the language). I'm not a film buff but I find it a wonderful 'growing - up film'

I'm going to have to watch 'The Lady in the Van' over again. Sure I would have noted the sublime array of pink and yellow (such a preferable colour scheme to green and yellow), perhaps there is an oblique reference from Bennett I missed, 'I remember a day, early in childhood, when mother set me back on my feet and wiped my nose as she asked me if I knew the best way to combine sponge, jam and marzipan' or something like that.

Film was repeated on BBC4 late last night, well worth a re-watch for the things missed on first viewing - "who do you think you are, coming here & commenting on the Bishop liking meringues - are you a communist?" says nun to Bennett!

Followed by a superb docu on Bennett, his life & diaries - particularly worth watching for his socialist take on life in the mid-20thC compared with now; and for those who know Leeds (and the Dales) well - wonderful historic photos of the city, plus lengthy tour around it, esp the Town Hall, when the film was shot (I think 2016(?).

Well, meringues are acceptable when there is no other sweet but they are no Battenberg...

Thanks for the heads up on the Bennett documentary, might have missed that otherwise. But yet another must see to add to Bowie at Glastonbury, the new reenactments of 'Talking Heads', all the Storyvilles, Arenas and Panoramas I never watched when they were first aired but are available on the iPlayer now. I will be glad when this lock down ends and I can go travelling again so that TV does not matter so much. Except if I do go travelling, even to England, I am now worried that I will not be let back into Scotland...

I wouldn't say I know the Dales well but I did walk The Dales Way from Ilkley to Windimere back in 1978 and have returned to bits of that a few times over the years.
