Am all for free speech. Owen Jones and his cabal can scream "offence" until their lungs turn inside out. Makes my blood boil if you hadn't guessed.

That's the problem with this debate overall. People talk about JK Rowling being a bigot, but nobody can pinpoint a quote. Almost like reasoned debate is dead.

You do realise that it is possobke for what she says to be harmful whilst also not condoning people making threats of rape and violence against her? This is such a piss weak argument that is utterly typical of our times.

Cancel culture on 08:46 - Jul 8 by TractorWood | I'm in favour of US levels of free speech. People should be able to say whatever they like but being challenged for making stupid statements would become more important than ever! Exactly like the Rowling debate. The right to say something that is contextually stupid is very important. See Hong Kong. [Post edited 8 Jul 2020 8:47]

Agreed. But who decides what is stupid? That's where the danger lies.

What did she say that was harmful? Specifically? As far as I can tell, the latest row came about because she objected to the term "people who menstruate" and said the term "women" should have been used. And then she gets rape threats etc. And the debate focuses on how SHE is the hateful one. Which for me is a piss weak argument that is utterly typical of our times.

What she said that is harmful is that safe spaces for women are no longer safe if you let trans-women in. This is offensive because: 1) you are denying the rights of trans-people AND/OR 2) saying that some trans-people are using this conversion as a way to get at women. Point 1 on it's own isn't necessarily that uncommon - lots of people in this thread have shown reservations around this topic and are probably still in the men = men, women = women camp because that has been what we've grown up with and lived with. It will take time to change these opinions. Point 2 is a problem. It isn't too dissimilar to the old homophobic trope of gay people being bundled in with paedophiles, and is basically (imo) somebody holding opinion 1 and trying to justify it in an outlandish way. Rowling is going further down that rabbit hole now with her opinions on conversion therapy.

I've not read Rowling's piece on transgender. My views on transgender are that people can be whom they want. I've no problem if someone wants to change their gender. I have issues with what I hear about the Tavistock clinic but that's another thing. My support is for the principle of free speech and this quite worrying rise of the 'offended'. I've recently read 1984 and feel that creep of deleting history and it's reminders coming into society. |
Anyone who doesn't feel a sort of 1984-style dread hasn't been watching the news recently to be fair.

Nobody. Is. Condoning. Threats. To. Rape. Or. Harm. J.K. Rowling. She has a history of taking views that are transphobic, some of which has been explained by Jake earlier in this thread. She has a big platform and I imagine some of the audience she can reach includes young people who may be questioning their gender identity. It is right that her views are challenged. It is not right that people make threats against her for holding those views. This isn't hard.

So if there were cases of men who had transitioned to get into women's prisons for the purposes of assaulting them, would that make point number two invalid? Or at least challenge it? https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/oct/11/karen-white-how-manipulative-and I don't think Rowling said all safe spaces are no longer safe. Her point was that there is a danger some might not be.

What she said that was harmful has already been explained in this thread. Further to that, she decided to start a pile-on on some random guy on Twitter when they pointed out she had liked a (factually inaccurate) tweet about gender transitioning being like gay conversion therapy. This random guy then started getting threats to the extent that they were terrified to pick up the phone when their mum rang them as they feared she’d been targeted by the people abusing him. Like many celebrities, she’s an insane narcissist who thinks her view is king and who has never once listened to anyone putting across a reasoned opposing view, instead accusing everyone of ‘trolling’ her and being misogynist. No one condones the threats of violence against her so stop hiding behind that as a reason to not engage with anything else.
