if anyone interested

Hi Sam, could you let me know how Ben Knight is progressing?

Thanks very much, and interesting question. He’s been good but I think that shine has dimmed a little, the expectation around him that he had when he left Ipswich isn’t quite there at the moment (or before lockdown anyway). He’s obviously a very good player but from what I’ve seen and heard he doesn’t especially stand out in the teams he’s in. Maybe that’s due to playing up an age group, but I also don’t think he’s been training with the first team recently, and a lot of others his age have been. He’ll end up at a good level but probably not City - you could say that about 95% of them as that’s the nature of the beast

Why not...? The principle is the same, going to big clubs, get lost in the fog.

Benyu’s agent pulled blinder, lord knows how he got that move, he was never the same level of prospect as those you name him alongside.

That’s without mentioning his attitude/application problem.

He was never going to make it at paradise.

You hear the rumours of a 7 figure signing on fee, and they probably aren't that far wide off the mark.

His deal would have been a 4 year one at a level which would have made him one of, if not, our highest paid player - he's a long way from that here but it is chicken feed up there

Also, now in a position that when he gets put out on loan he will have a super powerful club dictating that he has to play x games or heavy penalty fees etc. It's a no brainer move for kids like that unless their previous cluibs can guarantee them first team football at a young age, which we haven't even been able to do for Dozzell

Completely agree that the offer was far too good for the young lad and his family to turn down.

Your point in regards to Dozzell though, he hasn’t featured as much as we’d have all hoped, because he hasn’t been good enough.

If he hadn’t have had quite a serious injury early in his career, Dozzell might well have played a lot more games for the first team.

I don't disagree, but he could well - and I think it is currently most likely outcome - leave here without having had a run of games in the side.

That's a travesty for a prospect like he was - look at him this season.

Starts v AFC Wimbledon, off after an hour, doesn't play next 3 games
Starts v Gillingham - off after 65, doesn't start next 2
Starts v Accrington, off at half time, out of 18 for the next 2 games, 2 minutes over the next 3 games
Atarts 2 games in a row, full 90 v Coventry, off after 65 v Bristol Rovers, not involved in next 2 games, stats v Lincoln, not involved in next 12 games
Starts next 2 games, season over

No player can get into their swing like that, he is always dropped into unfamiliar teams and given no opportunity to succeed. He's always the one that makes way when the unfamiliar team doesn't work and then isn't seen for a few weeks

When has he had a chance though? A run in a settled team in a position that suits him?

People always say they need to earn it, that is true to an extent but you do need to give young players opportunities to flourish - I guarantee if George Burley was our manager he'd have given him a proper run

Is it fairly common for a player to create as much interest as what Ben Knights did? Obviously we won’t hear about it if the smaller club is for example Yeovil.

Do you know how well the other players are doing who left us- think a couple went to arsenal and Chelsea?

Appears that Harry Clarke (scorer of the viral "Barcelona" goal) is on the fringes of the first team squad at Arsenal. Signed a new contract in December. Now a defender.

Completely agree and it’s the reason why I think PL should go. I’m not sure if the club knows that most fans feel that he has failed and want him out.

Anyway, in my opinion I think that younger players need to be shown patience as they will make mistakes. Managers always have players that they trust but this season, some players simply seem to be given limitless time to shine whilst others simply get dropped.

Given your rich and storied history of posting absolute BS, would you care to add a source to that?

Seems a reasonable thing to wish on a young man doing the right thing by his family...

This post is what happens when grown adults never get beyond that childlike mentality of football being the most important thing in the world.

Jesus, all the kid did was take a better paying job with more prospects.

Your post is ridiculous.

So once again then a youngster with potential sees the bright lights and lots of £signs , moves to the big club only to end up never being seen again. He’d had done better to have stayed at Town for all the good it’s done him.

If my memory serves me correctly the 4 talented young Ipswich players poached by Premier League vultures are:
Ben Knight Man City
Charlie Brown Chelsea
Reuben Flores Arsenal
Harry Clarke Arsenal.
Other than Ben the only one who you hear about, occcasionally, on social media, is Charlie.
I understand they were tempted away by generous offers byt I can't help thinking they might have prospered more by staying at Portman Road. It will be interesting to see if any of them make it.

There are more stops on the way down from clubs like Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal than there is from Ipswich.

I think you hear more about Brown because of his age, the others are younger.

Marcelo Flores has only just signed his scholarship, i.e is only now moving to the U18s squad - he actually played a few games for them including the big FA Youth Cup games as a schoolboy which is some going. None of our U16s played for the U18s in the Youth Cup last year. He is seen as one of their brightest prospecs and playing for Mexico 2 years above himself currently.

Harry Clarke is a regular for Arsenal u23s and progressing well, has signed a longer term deal - got a chance to push on now.

They are all regularly playing at their clubs - Brown is at make or break time with his loan spells and Knight is struggling a bit it seems

Sad that a club which has always prided itself on giving youth a chance has lost many of its prospects to the PL. Still, it's a great opportunity for all of them. Wish them well. It does annoy me a bit when you hear good young players from the area being poached and ending up somewhere else, like we can't see the potential ourselves.

That's a result of the EPPP sadly I'd suggest, we all feared it would be the case

It does appear to yield a bit more money for younger players but it does mean the big clubs can pick up anyone with any promise before they can develop at their parent club

As people have said above, the academy drop outs from the bigger clubs tend to get more opportunities at professional clubs before completely falling into obscurity. We have had a few decent prospects who now just play Non-League football for local clubs.

For Ben Knight perhaps a loan to someone like us, much like Angus Gunn's loan to Norwich is what he needs?

It has always been the way though, and bigger clubs lose players to other big clubs and abroad.

There is a certain element of player power now which sin't a bad thing, the players are able to dictate things to protect their own careers a little bit more
