Teddy Bishop is 24 years old today... 15:07 - Jul 15 with 8408 viewsLibero

He's been playing in the first team for six seasons, made 87 League appearances and averages a full 90 minutes less than once a season.

Always makes me chuckle when I see people listing him in their starting elevens.

He's back to full fitness next month though...

The saddest part of this is that if he wasn’t injury prone he would be playing in the PL.

In comparison, none of our other current central midfielders (even in their prime) are good enough to play at that level.

I dunno, that’s quite a leap in my opinion.

Agree we don’t have a Premier League quality midfielder currently, but which League One club does?

He paid a hefty chunk out of his own pocket for rehabilitation during his last injury.

I'd say he's more than a little frustrated...

Must be mentally gruelling. Still, I’m sure he’s done well for himself and is set up to be a success in life, regardless of how his football career goes from here on out.

It's hilarious? Sad really.

I'm not sure you can call him one of our best players, can you?

Point I'm trying to illustrate is that he's beyond being a player with potential and is unfortunately probably now a player that has failed to achieve said potential.

Failed to achieve is a harsh way of putting it I think. You yourself posted his numbers in terms of appearances. You're not telling me they were so limited because the management didn't rate him?

He's got a way to go either way. It's not like if he was fit he would be ripping it up and instantly be destined for bigger things than Ipswich, and one goal across his career really isn't great, but I don't think the appearances he's made are enough to conclude that he's failed, unless you're purely referring to his failure to keep fit.

Oh yes how frustrating to be picking up the wage he does for not doing a lot.

Think about it...

...if he hadnt suffered such injuries, he would likely be playing higher than League 1 and picking up far more money.

...yes he is well paid, but he could be far better paid if he hadnt been injured.

That's the problem, it's so long ago none of us can quite remember for certain!

When he first came into the team in 2014-15, he immediately looked as if he belonged, which is unusual for an 18 year old. That season, he was excellent & looked like he could become a terrific player. Since then, he's barely doubled the 33 games he played in his first season in another 5 years. When he has played, he's looked OK in brief moments, but has never really matched his first season. I guess the succession of injuries have taken their toll & if it wasn't for that first season, many of us would be putting him in the Luke Hyam "local lad who isn't quite good enough" bracket. A bit like Emyr Huws, who's played a total of 22 games in the last 3 seasons & last year, looked a shadow of the player we had on loan in 2017. Both of these are at a level where they should be far more influential, but I would be surprised if it happened for either of them.

Didn't Luke Hyam get linked with Everton briefly? I know Owen Garvan did but I think Hyam did too. I rated Garvan for a while (shame he never kicked on - don't think the Dark Lord Keane helped his cause!) but I was never sold on Hyam.

Part of being a professional footballer is being physically fit enough to play 90 minutes, poor old Teddy has only done that a handful of times despite heading towards his mid twenties!

Horrendous what's happened to him with the injuries, but actually when he has played he hasn't really made much of a mark in recent years, has he.
As you insinuate, you can't assume that if he was playing week-in-week-out that he'd be playing any differently to what we have seen when he's made a few appearances.
That's why it's so important he does put in some back to back 90's, to prove what he can do, as I think it's fair to say that despite promise at the start of his career he has it all to prove.

Incredible natural talent, glided past players beautifully when he first burst on the scene, but there will be players who were more naturally gifted than Teddy at the Academy who were let go because they didn't poses X, Y, Z.
I believe he suffered with injuries in the Academy too? Maybe physically he's just not up to it unfortunately.

This coming season really is the last roll of the dice for Teddy here.
I can't think of a single example of a player in his mid 20's who has only completed 90 minutes less than ten times that then goes on to have a solid career.

I remember a particular day where Garvan put on a midfield master class at Carrot Road. Don't think he put a pass wrong!

Interestingly, by the time Owen had played six seasons of professional football he had made nearly double the amount of appearances Ted has and scored 16 league goals.

Owen also suffered from persistent injury problems.

In hindsight my post was more than a leap.

For clarification I think Bishop, when fully fit, is more naturally gifted and better than the vast majority of other central midfielders we’ve had in ten years. And if fully fit, I think he would be in the PL. Even going back to when we were in the playoffs I don’t think we’ve had a better central midfielder in a long long time.

I’ve probably forgotten about someone no doubt.

2014-15. Blackpool, wasn't it?

It might also have been one of the times that can be counted on one hand where Teddy played a full match.

Great natural ability, but it really does seem like he's just not quite up to the overall standards required to be a professional footballer unfortunately.
If he's lucky someone like Cambridge or Colchester will take a punt on him!

Fair assessment, although he shined like a diamond due to his qualities setting him apart I n a very workman like midfield, which potentially only further served to exaggerate his perceived talents.

Great natural ability though, no question - just maybe not worthy of being on the kind of pedestal where supporters still consider him “one of our best players”

Best footballer at the club when fully fit. Sadly he can’t crack the fully fit side of things nowhere near enough.

Must be frustrating for him, but it shows you why there’s little room for sentiment. He’s been taking up a spot for little return. As good as he can be we have to have more consistency.

I’m probably guilty of thinking too highly of him, which when you think about his career to date hoes against logic. I can’t speak for others, but for me, it proves how devoid we’ve been of central midfielders who have a bit of flair about them.

If available you have to put him in.

Real shame, but at 24, perhaps there is still a chance of a run?!?! (how many times have we said that!!). He gives more pace than Judge behind the strikers.

Huws seemed to really fade after coming back in as well, did he pick up a niggle. I thought Downes and he would become nailed on as the central midfield two.

With El Mizouni coming through, perhaps that will see Bishop's ultimate fall abck from the first team.

Lambert desperately needs pace and to break the lines to move these teams and defences out of shape... KVY is a huge piece of his approach.. lets hope Bishop, Dobra, El Mizouni can add to those options?!

One of the few slight pleasures to take from 2018/19 was seeing Teddy get a run of games under his belt. He didn’t do enough to make a decisive difference alas, but I remember when we conceded that late winner to Reading at Portman Road, I remember catching sight of him and feeling slightly heartened that he was trying to gee everyone up (Reading had scored at the start of 6 minutes stoppage time, so it was still recoverable. Quaner missed a good chance before full time).

Small consolation I know, but I was pleased to see that it mattered to him. That after so much time away from the sharp end, he was trying to lead and galvanise. He could end up being an elder statesman figure to Dobra, El Mizouni, Lankester etc.

He'll be tearing it up.... on 15:25 - Jul 15 by Libero

I'd suggest his situation is somewhat different to McGoldrick's.

Yes, McGoldrick was on the wrong end of some injuries and spent time on the sidelines, but what's really concerning in my opinion is how few 90 minutes Teddy has actually completed in professional football.

In his debut season where he made 33 of his appearances he was often the first man to come off, around the 70 minute mark, clearly because he was a young lad and required a degree of protection, however the trend has stuck well into his 20's unfortunately.

I'm not sure how many years he's got left on his contract, but I'd suggest next season is the now or never season for Bishop at Ipswich Town.
He needs to be playing 90 minutes, week-in-week-out. If he can put together a string of consecutive performances there's a chance all is not lost, but I have to say I'm skeptical.

We've been saying now or never for the past 4 years with Bishop, as you say, at 24 he really should have pushed on but injuries have hampered him so much.

You can understand an 18yr old getting them when hitting 1st team men's football, I remember Gerrard having major ankle issues but grew out of them by the time he was 21, Bishop at 24 has one final punt imo due to our current status, if not then Leiston beckons.
