Maguire’s Douglas moment 22:26 - Jul 20 with 1483 viewscatch74

He’s clearly not back up to speed, wish him well and hope this is just a dip in fitness and or form.

United is just a golden pension. See Sanchez, Pogba, De Gea etc.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I guess so - if you happily forget about Rashford, Greenwood, Martial, Fernandes, Wan Bissaka, Bailly, James & Lindelhof.

Real Madrid’s squad is arguably packed with more OAPS on significantly higher wages...Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Bale, Benzema, Isco, Rodríguez, Kroos, Carvhal, Nacho - to name but a few.

Got to love the English, a player makes one rick and that clearly means they are a waste of money (aimed at the tweet rather than the OP).

Yeh Bailly and Wan Bissaka were academy products?

I thought they cost a combined £75m.

To be fair to Real Madrid it has worked. Bale has 4 champions leagues. In 5 years at United, Martial has won one FA cup, one league cup and a Europa League.

I’m merely commentating on their ages.

De Gea, despite his age & recent poor form, is still considered (before COVID-19) a £100m rated player. Pogba as well.

You couldn’t say that about Modric, Marcelo, or others for example.

So....now you are suggesting that being a club full of ageing pensioners is a good thing as it’s worked for Real Madrid? Your original post suggested it was a negative.

Real Madrid's approach is risky and costly but it's worked. United's has not.

United have wasted hundreds of millions on players who either look like excellent prospects and don't improve or the finished articles who don't really perform. They are definitely doing something wrong.

Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sanchez, Lukaku, MacGuire. That's like £300m there.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

So are we now talking about success or recouped revenue from golden pensions?
You seem to be changing the goalposts here.

Two very different beasts.

Also...

Angel Di Maria purchased £60m
Sold £44m

Lukaku purchased £75m
Sold €80m

Sanchez - swap deal

Depay purchased £25m
Sold £17m

They’ve genuinely clawed most of those transfer fees back.

United got it badly wrong for a number of years - pretty much the entire post-Ferguson era up until a couple of years ago and arguably before then too. You only need to look at them dropping down the table to see that

They had a clear change in strategy towards bringing in younger players a couple of years back and there are signs that it could bear fruit, although they’re still quite a way behind Liverpool and City (and probably Chelsea)

Your golden pension comment would have had merit before but does look a little odd against their current squad - especially singling out De Gea who was probably their best signing of that bad era and Pogba who does remain one of their most valuable players

Not changing any goalposts. I'll I've said is that they've spent hundreds of millions on dross who aren't up to it and they are a home for expensive non-performers earning ridiculous salaries.

You can endlessly debate the granular detail of the precise signings in isolation but the above is irrefutably true and to me their lack of strategy is abundantly clear when you look down their scatter gun, hit and hope signings.

He has not looked right in the last few games, and the head injury early in that game probably didn't help.
