Have spoken to a few cyclists reluctant to use public roads due to the dangers. I have been pleasantly surprised to be honest.

But I do keep off the roads 8 to 9 and 5 to 6 midweek though, which is a shame as it's perfect temperature wise.

Might be worth looking at joining a local cycling club, my old club runs intro rides, social rides and club rides, at increasing levels pace and distance, with ride leaders and a few experienced old boys and girls mixed in as well. This is Newmarket cycling and triathlon club but many clubs do a similar thing with rides on a Saturday and Sunday.
