Broads improvement under Root has been remarkable really. 10x the bowler he was 4/5 years ago.

I think England are managing him & Anderson pretty well at the moment. We have 6 tests in 8 weeks & all our bowlers are fit so it would be absurd to play them in every game, I think Jimmy will go until the next tour of Aus whilst it's difficult to put a time scale on Broad as he's still only 34 & hasn't suffered any injuries. The longer we can keep these guys around for the likes of Stone, Curran, Archer, Woakes et al to learn from the better.

I was lucky enough to see them live in the Ashes Test at Headingley, 1981.

Some things are worth being "old" for

Thomson didn't tour in 81. I was at the Lords test after which he lost the captaincy. After that match he went to my Dad's pub in Taunton to drown his sorrows.

You look at Anderson, seems fit as a fiddle and still bowling 85mph+ and for a 37 year old. Are we writing him off too early?

Anderson is fit - but he has struggled in the last 18 months with injuries - and at his age, could only be one more injury that ends it.

You've also got to remember that neither Anderson or Broad have decent records down under. They both rely on a bit of assistance - and when its there, their is no-one better, but they have both struggled when its flat with the duke ball. they average about 37 and 35 in Australia. Although the way that Broad is currently bowling reminds me of McGrath, in that relentless good length, so perhaps he might succeed this time.

IN terms of replacements, Woakes is supreme in english conditions. Its only because we have Broad and Anderson that he's not had the chances that he'd like - but when you look at his stats - he's so so good.

Woakes doing his thing again today - his strike rate in England is obscene... a wicket every 7 overs pretty much. Most people think that anything less than 60 is good - he is at 44.

Get them at 35 and the ausssies dont hit 400... Which would be nice!
