Football is an utter mess Part 5,689 - Charlton edition 15:25 - Jul 28 with 2096 viewsSteve_M

Standard reporting that they are in danger of being expelled from the League if they can't demonstrate sufficient funding:

https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/charlton-risk-expulsion-football-leagu

Key paragraph:

"There is scepticism about why Elliott, whose background is in property and hospitality, got involved in Charlton when football was still shut down and clubs feared going out of business. Farnell was Bury’s lawyer when they were expelled from the EFL, eight months after Dale bought the club for £1."

Having the Borough Council own the ground keeps away the chancers who fancy a bit of town centre real estate. I wonder if they will look to sell it, possibly to the club, to try and help their budget? Not sure if the club can afford it, though!

I don't think the council will ever sell it, it's just not worth their while.

I think the club would snap it up if they could, the Supporters Trust registered it as an Asset of Community Value a few years back so wouldn't be able to be done in an underhand way either without being made public

The club did try to buy it, but IBC said no.

Clegg: Town Keen to Own Freehold 12th Oct 2011 01:09
Town chief executive Simon Clegg has revealed that the Blues would like to own the freehold of Portman Road. Clegg confirmed that the club offered to buy the land on which their stadium is built earlier in the year but says they and landlords Ipswich Borough Council were some way apart in their valuations. 19

How does it work - do we pay rent or a lease? Presumably if so it’s a guaranteed money spinner for them so will never sell to us.

Rent, as per the below.

Town and IBC Reach Rent Agreement 10th Feb 2012 13:09
TWTD understands that Town have resolved their long-running dispute with Ipswich Borough Council regarding £654,702 in back rent owed on the land on which the Portman Road stadium stands. The agreement reached will see the Blues pay the cash over a period of six years, two years longer than had been proposed by IBC last October. 10

might be worth checking it still is, ACVs only last 5 years, plus it doesnt really give much protection anyway it offers the community the option to come together to put in a bid to purchase the land if the landowner annouces they are selling.

so if the council were going to sell, are the fans going to chip in and buy the ground ?
