Are we really looking to waste our limited resources on ANOTHER keeper? 09:36 - Jul 29 with 4409 viewsWallingford_Boy

Do many other teams (other than top sides) have more than one first choice goalie?

Surely its Holy as number one, with Wright and/or Przybek back up.

Or if management don't have faith in Holy, get rid.

IMO Holy is fine at this level, now lets move on and get some bloody defenders in to help protect that goal!!

(As much as Kenlock, Wilson, Chambers, Nsiala, Edwards, etc excite me, I think we may just need to strengthen in this area before we get another bloody keeper!)

We definitely need a senior #2 keeper. There's an argument we need a #1 keeper IMO but if we work for now on the basis Holy is capable enough, we can't start the season with those completely unproven kids as back ups.

Agree. re a number of our defenders though. Chambers still has something to offer and Kenlock deserves a chance, but Wilson and Nsiala are pony. Edwards isn't a defender, to be fair to him. He was show horned in there out of desperation.

I agree, Holy is good enough and there is no point in us keeping Wright and Przybek if we're never giving them a chance.

Yes they're unproven, but aren't both older than Richard Wright, Lewis Price and Shane Supple when they were all thrown in and became our first choices?

Centre back and left back should be far more of a priority!

Yeah you are right re: Edwards, hopefully he won't ever play right back again!

Kenlock has had chances and fails to impress every time. Chambers is done, has been for a while, but yes, he is a leader and with slightly better quality around him, may just get away with it for one more season.

Just saying there are other areas that need strengthing before spending wages on back up players. The two young keepers are rated, so IF anything happens to Holy, why not give them a go?

Didn't Norris come with terms that he'd play a % of games last season? I'm not keen on a scenario like that again. Decide if Holy is number one or not and if he is, get a veteran keeper in for backup and the experience.

It just creates an issue that needn't exist IMO. Getting Norris in just created an unnecessary headache for Lambert. I rate him, I think he's an excellent GK but having 2 players that expect to start in that position was always going to cause disruption.

If we've got confidence Holy is #1 then make him such, if not we need to bin him off. Personally I think we need to give him that position and be done with it. My nervousness is if he's crocked for 6 months we're then relying on unproven kids, which is a big ask. We need a senior head, a mentor to them all who is happy in a latter stage of his career to sit on the bench.

Indeed, if Holy got injured the day after the window closed PL would get absolutely slaughtered for having only two keepers who have played one senior game - and that in the Leasing.com Trophy - between them.

There is a big difference in some experienced back up, just in case, who can help the two young keepers and a rival number one who expects to play every week!

Thats my point.

We have very little cash, don't waste it on a keeper that is coming here as a potential number one. (Unless we get rid of Holy).

I can see the logic of that and I'd be happy with a latter-day Keith Branagan type signing, although I'd still want them to compete with Holy rather than settling for being a permanent bench-warmer.

I don't really get what the issue is with having a 2nd senior keeper? Wright is never going to make it here, so let's just forget about him. Przybek has barely played at first team level.

I don't mind so much as long as that 2nd senior keeper is ours, rather than a loan player like Norris who we're stuck with, and playing, just so we don't have to pay towards his wages.

Guess then the point is if Wright is never going to make it here then why is he still here? We extended his deal this summer...

The issue is if Holy breaks his leg on day one, with no loans allowed outside of a transfer window we could be relying on those kids for 3 months.

There may be someone in the latter stages of their career happy to take a very low wage and sit on the bench.

See my above comments, just this.

Big difference between an old head as back up and another younger keeper looking to be number 1.

Resources required elsewhere first!

Yeah an older head as back up to Holy has to be the way forward, with one of the kids as 3rd keeper.

I've said it before but I also think we lack a lot of balls, leadership, character etc. Call it what you will. I'm not sure another wet behind the ears, knees trembling kid in the dressing room will do much to fix that. It's a good opportunity to put a grand a week to an older head who has a bit about them, to mentor and lead, to take a bit of that pressure off Chambers who really is about the only one who overtly does that. Downes tends to lead by example, but the likes of Holy, Skuse, Norwood etc really need to too. If we can get a capable keeper who is also the right character it could be a double win.

How did Tranmere manage to get a keeper in from Peterborough (Aaron Chapman) on loan last season when their number 1 was injured? They still had a young inexperienced keeper on the bench

It is madness to go into the season with just one senior keeper. No competition for places and if Holy gets injured for a period of time we will be in trouble. Wright and Przybek have zero experience between them and keepers are generally better when older. We absolutely should bring in another.

Our management must have some idea as to who is better out of Wright & Przybeck. We aren't a Man city, endlessly stockpiling young players, so we should keep the better of the two & get rid of the other. Then get in an ageing journeyman as back up - please not a young loan player whom his parent club will expect to play a minimum number of games.

If Pryzbeck or Wright are not good enough to step in for a couple of games...or god forbid a couple of months should both still be at the club?

Holy

Whose the odd man out and doesn't get enough game time at any level?

This is a club that survived for two years with Price and Supple as the only two keepers in the Championship!!
