Any idea why theirs applies for next season but others have been hit in the current season?

No reason given so far. They’ve bottled it would be my guess and Charlton and Wigan’s lawyers might have something to say

I’m assuming the reason it won’t be deducted until next season is because the league season had finished before the decision was made?

No Charlton went down 3rd bottom - if Sheff Wed points deduction was this season, they would have stayed up.

They were charged in November 2019, so in theory it should be this season.

Charlton’s lawyers have confirmed they will be taking up the issue with EFL

Maybe a sharp reminder to those Town fans that want Evans to spend beyond permitted levels . I just wish the EFL would punish all the clubs that go this . His for instance have Derby not been called out with their level of spending ?

Derby's punishment is forever coming so close to promotion but always falling short.

EFL waiting until Derby hit a promotion or Play Off place after 46 games and then clobber them back into mid table?

The EFL is ***ked, how a club can vote to stop the rest of the season but be quite happy to play in the play-offs is wrong for a start.
Instead of clubs voting for their own self interests you need a commissioner
at the top of the game who controls things, someone making the decisions and properly looking at deals when people are buying clubs, Bury have gone down the toilet on the EFL's watch Bolton nearly did and ***k knows what's going on at Charlton.
The EFL need to grow some balls and instead of handing out penalties to clubs going into administration, by fly-by-night owners who couldn't give a ***k about the team they bought and investigate them BEFORE they take control, do a PROPER fit and persons test. Let's see your money and your plan, then you can take over.

Worth noting that Sheffield Wednesday’s punishment is for a different reason to Wigan’s and at this point I think the EFL are stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to punishing them

In Wigan’s case the crime is cut and dried - they went into administration and were handing a fixed penalty as a result. Wigan can appeal that the circumstances were exceptional but there isn’t really a grey area in the fact that they went into admin

Sheffield Wednesday’s is for FFP breaches which are more subjective, and no doubt they will appeal that the outcome is wrong. That puts the EFL in a much more difficult position as if they effectively relegated them and the Wednesday win an appeal next year they would be f*cked

Also the punishment is actually quite significant - larger than Birmingham’s deduction and I think the biggest that has ever been given. Under usual circumstances a 12 point deduction would be seen as a pretty decisive judgment

Of course, had the EFL pulled their finger out in the first place and resolved things much quicker they could be doing any appeal now and reaching a final decision with confidence, but that’s another story

Ah are they indeed. Well I hope they also get clobbered, as they’ve been flouting the rules for years now. They’ve flooded their ground , so have probably nothing left to sell now. I used to respect DCFC in the Clough era . Not any more.

Would imagine it is because the regular season has finished. That doesn't make it any fairer though, the decision has been pending for several months.

It should be applied to the season in which the breach took place and the charges were made. From a sporting point of view surely that's only fair?

I find it bizarre (and unfair) that Wednesday's issues came to light in November, where Wigan's situation manifested in April/May. Latics walloped for 12 points this year, but Wednesday survive until next season.

Am I the only one that finds that grossly unfair on Wigan, especially when it seems out of their hands and EFL passed the Fit & Proper Person test and the new owner dumped them into administration straight away.

The breach was in the 2017/18 season, which would see them demoted from 15th to 19th in the final standings
