Interesting piece on the accuracy of antibody testing for covid 10:05 - Aug 4 with 1359 viewsSteve_M

Basically, some people who have had severe symptoms have tested negative for antibodies whilst some with few symptoms have tested positive. This is one small sample and the findings would need to be repeated to be useful.

Indeed. Also, the development and retention of antibodies is still being understood. For one thing, they only last a few months.

This is the real issue, if the studies on short-lived antibodies prove to be correct then a totally new approach to C19 will be required as a perpetual lockdown waiting for a vaccine won't be appropriate.

That's going to be an interesting on to unpick if there's any truth in the press stories that people testing positive with antibodies will be given more freedoms.

Would they not just need to tweak the vaccine each year like they do with flu? I have no idea how easy or hard that is but I assume the principle would be the same

Flu and C19 are quite different. Flu vaccines are about mutations and strains whilst C19 is about the body "forgetting" about the disease.

- C19 is shown to kill all year round (possibly less in summer but hot places are getting it bad at the moment so that's not proven)

- The flu vaccine is usually scientists best guess at what strain will be prevalent that year

- If a C19 vaccine provided 3 months worth of antibody memory you'd need 4 a year

It's too early to know exactly what the issues will be.

Although T-cell immunity may still be effective even if antibodies are short-lived.

Altho T-Cell production decreases significantly with age, especially in the over-50s.
