Trump still ahead in Texas, Georgia and Iowa 20:02 - Aug 6 with 7312 views | reusersfreekicks | These are key states. I just don't understand what is the matter with people? Wilful ignorance? Stupidity? Nasty human beings? How can so many people support such a dangerous idiot?

Not in the all-consuming variety and I'm sure that most of them are nice, friendly, community-spirited, God-fearing people. But Trump especially and the Republicans generally hate the people they hate. Think that makes for a powerful bond, which objectivity and even Trump's own dangerous and self-serving idiocy can't break.

That and fear. Fear of the "other", of change, of the upsetting of the social order. As if Texas would instantly become a vision of liberal, cosmopolitan New York.

Trump still ahead in Texas, Georgia and Iowa on 20:52 - Aug 6 with 4124 views | SpruceMoose | They aren't key states exactly, obviously they'd be good to win but there are more viable targets for Democrats to target. Those states are largely rural, outside the cities it's always going to go on the Republican's favour. Saying that, as ever, polls are just a snapshot in time. Still a long way to go. Keep an eye on Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan and North Carolina. That's where the real race will be.

Texan cities are generally pretty liberal though, I think it's a rural thing. Even in New York state the upstate super white areas lean heavily to Trump. Maybe it's harder to demonise people when they are your neighbours and colleagues and you know first hand that they largely face all the same struggles as you do. It's easy to get people to turn on the people they don't mix with, especially when they've been deliberately kept poor and uneducated. [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 21:09]

Trump still ahead in Texas, Georgia and Iowa on 21:01 - Aug 6 with 4100 views | Tangledupin_Blue | The three you mention have been Republican for years, including the 2016 election, and Biden could well win without taking any of them. I was reading last night that Texas, won in 2016 by Trump with something like 9% majority over Clinton, is now a toss-up state with Biden 0.2% behind Trump. If Biden could creep ahead and win Texas then Trump would need to win Georgia and Iowa which you've mentioned plus the rust belt states of Pennsylvania (Biden's home state), Wisconsin and Michigan plus Florida and he would need to turn over other states which Clinton won last time round. Edit... In short, If Biden wins Texas then he will by president with a big majority and the margin in Texas is thin. [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 21:03]

If Biden takes Texas then there's no way he won't also take PA, WI, MI etc. It'll be a rout. I don't think Biden will take Texas, but like you say I don't think his path to winning relies on him doing so, and I don't think he thinks he will either. But the fact that he's having to make Trump spend money to defend the state is good news. Texas is becoming more and more of a purple state though. It wouldn't surprise me to see Texas start to elect some Senate Democrats in the coming years, and eventually even vote Democrat in a general election.

I think it'll be a rout anyway. He is well ahead in the three rust-belt states which Trump won in 2016 and he is ahead in Florida. He only needs one of those four (I think) [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 21:17]

I think so too. I can't see how he can turn this around while the pandemic and the economy continues to tank. He has fired all of his capable staff. He's working with that White Power ghoul Miller and a whole host of incompetents, there's no talent there at all. There are no grown ups to fix the country anymore. I've been waiting for this moment over the last four years. The moment when reality catches up to all the gaslighting and people start to pay a real cost for their political beliefs. I think we are in the midst of it. I've been burned in too many elections over the last God knows how many years to feel really comfortable thinking that though. Especially when we know Trump isn't above cheating and taking help from other countries in order to win. It needs to be a landslide win for Biden in order to destroy any doubt that he actually won.

It's interesting that Iowa voted for Obama/Biden in both general elections and then went for Trump. I know Clinton was loathed, so that played a part, but those Obama-Trump voters are interesting to me. I'm curious to see how they come out to vote this time. [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 21:18]

Trump still ahead in Texas, Georgia and Iowa on 21:22 - Aug 6 with 4021 views | tractordownsouth | The fact that TX and GA are even competitive are good for the Democrats. Sure there have been demographic changes that make them more left wing states, but even 4 years ago Trump won them by 9 and 15 points respectively. I think he’ll just cling on in both but he’ll have to spend funds there which he can’t afford to do. As long as Biden wins Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (which the economist predict he has an 85% chance of doing) he’ll have enough. Polls have been narrowing in Trump’s favour but barring any major game changers, the nightmare will be over after 1 term.

I have this completely wrong... Biden needs to pick up 43 electoral college points from the 2016 result and those most likely are... Michigan 16 Wisconsin 10 Pennsylvania 20 Florida 29 Arizona 11 Texas 36 Iowa 6 Georgia 16 North Carolina 15 Edited... 28 college points, not 43 Edit again. It is 43, not 28 and I have added NC to the list (And I am an eejit) [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 21:38]

I'd add North Carolina (15) to that list too. Biden up there by 2 points currently, so it's competitive.

I think Trump himself will fade into the background fairly rapidly. The danger is that the next figurehead his backers find might be less of a loose canon. Tho it's equally possible it may be a series of more orthodox hard-right characters, but lower profile, less media-cunning, weaker and more divisive within the group. Much like happened with the BNP and with UKIP after the departure of Griffin and Farage respectively.
