I sincerely hope Oli Hawkins is given a chance .... 15:51 - Aug 17 with 8696 viewsArnieM

By some section of our fans. I just fear he’ll get a similar treatment metered out to Sam Parkin. I hope I’m wrong .

By all accounts we'll need to give him several chances.

Given that McGoldrick had scored 16 goals in 22 games for Coventry the season we signed him, I suspect their fans were pretty high on him

Forest was his parent club & I honestly don’t recall any Forest fans coming on here waxing lyrical about a player they were letting go on a freebie.

They’d never seen the best out of him. Hence his 3 loan spells during his 4yr tenure there.

Lambert isn't going to magically become competent because he's made the sort of signings that people would moan about Mick or Royle making.

Mick and Royle actually coached players and knew what they were doing.

I agree, but we are going into a new season and every fan should go into it with optimism. I have my concerns about Lambert, but I will always go into a new season with optimism and hope.

Parkin won me £100 bagging 2 goals & beating Leeds 17 odd years ago.
So he’s alright with me.

More to the point, I don’t recall any fans of previous clubs had good words to say about Chambers or McGoldrick when they joined us.

17 odd years ago.

Flippin' heck.

If there is one post that has starkly reminded me that time flies and we have done sod all in said time, this is it.

Suspect his game is about bringing others into play as much as scoring goals.

If he offer us an effective alternative, I'd be happy with 10-12 goals from him.

Good point.  Scowcroft never scored more than 15 a season for us but we know how effective he was at causing havoc in and around the box and thus laying on chances for others around him to profit from.

Not pretending Hawkins is going to be anything like as effective as Scowcroft but I could see others feeding off his aerial presence if he's given enough time on the pitch.  Be interesting to see how he does.  I wasn't that excited about him when he was first linked but now he's here we obviously all want to see him succeed.

Let's hope he comes good for us.

There's not too much to be optimistic about, fam. Sticking with Lambert means we're entering this season with two arms and a leg tied behind our back.

Also Parkin was a Chelsea youth product, so I think people thought we had got one that had slipped through the net and would make the step up.

Tbf to him he looked a good finisher, I remember highlights at Swindon and he scored all types of goals.

I mean, fans on this thread already setting expectations of wanting 10-12 goals a season from him.

He's only scored 14 in his last 77 Portsmouth apps.

In a lower league he scored 19 in 63 apps for Dagenham....

Royle got it wrong. He thought he was getting an old fashioned big man and played him as such, and fans thinking we'd been had were not very complimentary or patient with Parkin as a result.

We'd put what little money we had into him too and were using him totally wrong. A bit like if Will Keane had been our main signing.

Parkin looked great on paper, having scored for fun with Swindon for 3 seasons & was being chased by other Div 2 clubs. I had high hopes, especially as he was 6'2" & we needed someone to lead the attack. While he was neat on the ground, he certainly wasn't the aerial target man we needed & I do recall ironic cheers after he at last won a high ball at PR. He'd still scored 5 in 19, all away from home, before he broke his ankle.

The diving header to score a late winner at Millwall, having already had treatment for a head injury, was my highlight of his time here. The goal at QPR was good too. He just wasn't the player that Royle thought he was and Royle had seemingly lost the appetite to get the best out of him that season.

The difference Alan Lee made to that team when we signed him in January was notable.
